Tomorrow, May 17th is world NEC awareness day.
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) causes inflammation and intestinal tissue death in babies with a premature gut.
NEC has an incidence of 2-13% with a mortality rate of up to 30%. The mortality rate increases to 50% in ELBW (extremely low birth weight) babies. Risk factors include formula feeding and breast milk fortification.
βBreast milk components stimulate intestinal stem cell activity & promote intestinal epithelial cell viability both of which help prevent necrotizing enterocolitis.β See more about this research by Hock et al. In the 2017 Journal of pediatric surgery.
