The Solo Trainer

The Solo Trainer Helping personal trainers go from gym employee to independent business owner. Mom, former manager for 40+ trainers, and successful business owner.

I'm sharing with you everything you need to start, grow, and manage your own thriving business.

Your time has a floor. Set it.

Before you build packages, you need to know your minimum hourly rate — the lowest amount your time is worth as an independent trainer.

A simple place to start?

Look at what your gym charges. You shouldn’t be charging less than that… and often, you should be charging more.

And if you travel to clients? That’s convenience. Convenience costs more.

When you know your minimum rate, your pricing gets clearer, your boundaries get stronger, and your business stops running on guesswork.

Personal trainer friends in the DMV, want to level up your injury prevention skills?

The guys from Exercise Therapy Association are coming to our area for a live workshop called Prevent Injury By Restoring Function on Thursday, February 26, 2026 from 2 to 4 PM, and you can come free as my guest.

I met them at a conference in Arizona last spring and took their Core Mastery course last fall. It helped me assess postural alignment and core strength in a way that actually sticks.

My clients have made real progress from these protocols, especially around back pain and movement quality. That’s why I’m helping them expand across the eastern US.

Location: The Sculpted Sanctuary
1749 Old Meadow Road #120, McLean, VA 22102
Date and time: Thursday, February 26, 2 to 4 PM

Want a spot? Comment “WORKSHOP” or send me a message with the email address you want me to use to register you. No forms.

Deadline for the free guest spots: Thursday, February 11, if space is still available.

I’ve seen this over and over in the fitness industry:

Some trainers are always chasing new leads.

And some stay booked year after year.

In today’s podcast episode, I’m sharing what a high demand personal trainer does differently—and why clients don’t leave, even when a cheaper option shows up.
It’s not “better workouts.”

It’s 4 specific habits that build trust and loyalty.

Not everyone is your client — and that’s a good thing.

If you want to stand out as a trainer, you have to get clear on who you’re actually meant to serve.
Who do you enjoy working with?

Who do you get the best results with?

“Niching down” doesn’t mean turning people away. It means building your business around the clients you serve best — instead of training every warm body that walks in.
Define your ideal client.

Your marketing, messaging, and confidence get a whole lot easier after that.

You didn’t leave the gym just for “more freedom.”

You left for a reason.

Before you build pricing, programs, or marketing… you have to get clear on why you became a business owner in the first place.

That “why” is what carries you through slow months, tough decisions, and the days you wonder if you made the right call.

Write it down.

Put it where you’ll see it.

Let it remind you why this leap mattered.

If you’re building your own training business, this is where it starts.

A lot of trainers leave the gym focused on one thing: getting clients.

But what often gets missed are the foundational pieces that actually make the business sustainable.

In this episode of The Solo Trainer Podcast, I break down the five areas every independent trainer needs to set up — whether you’re still planning your exit or already on your own and feeling unsure.

This episode is about clarity, not hustle.

January 1st marked the 9th anniversary of my independent training business, ! It is essential to celebrate these milestones. While I’ve had my ups and downs, I am so glad I have stuck with it. 2025 was the biggest year for my business! I absolutely love what I do! Thank you to all who have helped me remain successful! May you have a wonderful 2026! 💕 Jen

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to go independent, ask yourself this:

Do you want more control of your schedule?
Are you tired of pressure and quotas?
Do you want to earn what you’re worth?
Crave full autonomy in your programming?
Want long-term growth and opportunity?
Want a business aligned with your values?
And the biggest one — do you want your energy and joy back?
If those hit home, it may be time.
Which one stood out the most to you?

If you’re ready to go independent but not sure where to start, don’t just guess your way through it. The steps matter.

I created a free business guidebook and checklist that walks you through the legal setup, financial planning, pricing, marketing, systems, and everything else you need to launch and grow your training business the right way.

It’s the resource I wish existed when I started — and now it’s yours.

Link is in the bio.

Most independent trainers charge less than the gym because they feel they should.

But if you’re delivering personalized coaching, traveling, programming, and offering a better experience than a big-box facility — your price should reflect that.

Your business only works if your pricing supports the income and lifestyle you’re building, not one that forces you to train 40 sessions a week just to stay afloat.

Set your rate based on the value you provide — not the fear of what someone might think.

What’s one belief that makes pricing feel uncomfortable for you?

12/18/2025

When you leave the gym, leads don’t just walk up to you anymore.

You become the marketer, the connector, and the person responsible for getting in front of the right people.

Clients won’t show up just because you launched a business. You have to get visible, build relationships, and intentionally connect with the people you want to serve.

The good news? Once you learn how to do that well, your business becomes repeatable and sustainable.

Where are you currently showing up to meet potential clients?
