The Olympic training center offers a unique opportunity to dine within the same facilities as elite Olympic athletes. Access to their dedicated cafeteria requires the purchase of a ticket, priced at approximately 70 RMB (under $10 USD). This experience transcends the typical all-you-can-eat buffet, presenting a meticulously curated selection of exceptionally healthy fare.

Reflecting contemporary sports nutrition science, the offerings lean predominantly towards plant-based options, featuring an extensive and diverse array of vegetables. While the abundance of plant-forward choices is notable, the comparatively limited presence of animal-based foods within a buffet setting may initially seem unexpected.

A common misconception persists that top athletes, due to their high caloric expenditure, necessitate diets rich in high-calorie, high-protein, and consequently, animal-based foods. However, the reality is that the intense physical demands of elite training place significant stress on the athletes’ bodies, potentially hindering recovery. Beyond meeting essential macronutrient and caloric needs, a scientifically optimized dietary regimen for athletes prioritizes recovery through a wealth of micronutrients, antioxidants, polyphenols, and more. This necessitates a nutritional foundation that is largely plant-based, supporting both performance and recuperation.

This Spring (2025), I went to Olympic Training Center in Beijing to learn from Olympic Gold Medalists’ coaches, trainers and therapists.

The training facility is converted from a locomotive factory to prepare Olympic athletes for the 2022 Winter Game in Beijing. It is currently managed by Beijing Sport University for educational programs open to the public. Because Beijing Sport University is responsible for training China’s Olympic Team, the instructors at the program are the most authoritative experts in China who have trained, coached and treated the world-class athletes, many of which are Olympic Gold Medalists.

Too many people find Traditional Chinese Medicine too difficult to take. I am converting the waiting room of my Sunnyvale Office into a TCM-based café. I aim to develop various Chinese medicinal infused drinks to make it approachable to mainstream people.
