An incredible act of courage and compassion saved the life of an 8-year-old boy from Wisconsin.

Brayden Auten fell seriously ill in April after what began as a simple stomach ache rapidly turned into liver failure. His parents searched desperately for a compatible donor, but no family member matched. As his condition worsened and his liver completely failed, doctors faced an urgent race against time.

Enter Cami Loritz, a nurse in the transplant intensive care unit. Moved by Brayden’s story, she made a life-changing decision: she would become a living donor. On May 14, she underwent surgery to donate a portion of her liver to Brayden, who received the transplant the same day.

The operation was a success. Months later, Brayden met Loritz again in the hospital, now recovering and thriving. In a touching moment, he hugged her and called her his “big sister.”

Loritz has since used her experience to inspire others to consider living organ donation, showing how one selfless act can save a life—and change it forever.

Stories like this remind us that courage, compassion, and humanity still have the power to make miracles happen.

For nearly a year, Ashley Stanger's family endured constant checkups, major surgeries, close calls and nights spent sleeping at the hospital after her 4-year-old son, Lincoln, was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in early 2024.

​Then, late one March night in 2025, the call came that the Stanger family had been waiting for — New England Donor Services had found a match for Lincoln’s heart.

Lincoln’s transplant is one of thousands coordinated each year by New England Donor Services — a system now facing major federal changes.
