Both children and adults are at risk ofdeveloping cavities, or tooth decay.Cavities are the result of poor oralhygiene and retained dental plaque onthe tooth surface. Bacteria in plaqueproduce acid that destroys the tooth’senamel and its underlying layer thedentin, and can eventually reach thetooth’s nerve.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT CAVITIES?
Take these simple steps to avoid the pain and consequences of cavities:
• Brush at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, which strengthens teeth
• Floss at least once a day
• Use fluoride treatments or supplements as provided by your dentist
• Eat tooth-healthy foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese and other dairyproducts.
• Avoid sugary snacks and beverages
