“My mission and priority as the upcoming commissioner/mayor is to work ‘hand in hand’ with West New York’s finest, our brave women and men in blue, the West New York Police Department,” Roque, who served two terms as mayor between 2011 and 2019, said in a statement.
“With the guidance and expertise of the former and present police officers, Tommy Mannion and Elvis Alvarez, we will provide a safe environment at our schools so that our youth can thrive in their education with a safe academic setting. Our seniors will be able to live without the apprehension and fear of going out for an evening walk and getting mugged and raped.”

Alvarez, who is from a family of Cuban exiles who settled in West New York back in 1963, is a 25-year veteran of the department who was promoted to the rank of juvenile detective in 2018.

Also a co-founder of the West New York Girls Softball League, Alvarez coached basketball, football, and baseball, along with sponsoring teams for the local Babe Ruth league.
Additionally, he told HCV that he plans on retiring from the police force in the coming months.
Given Roque’s remarks to drive down crime and prioritize public safety at his campaign kickoff last week, it should come as no shock that he has selected a local police officer to join his team.
Mannion, who was announced as a running mate last week, is already retired from the force and is a former Policemen’s Benevolent Association president. Carmen Baez, a real estate professional, was also unveiled as a commissioner candidate last Thursday.
Roque has one more running mate to reveal ahead of the May 9th non-partisan municipal elections, with two other full slates announced.”

Former West New York Mayor Felix Roque is running to once again lead his hometown, a source tells InsiderNJ, in a fast-developing three-way Hudson County hula hoop contest.

Retiring U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8)?

Already in.

Commissioner Cosmo Cirillo.

Same.

Roque is also pawing at the turf and looking to dive into the fray, ready to go all in, a source said.

He’s looking to throw $200k at the race.

Roque later clarified.

“I haven’t announced, but I am taking a look at it and will make a decision in the new year,” the former mayor told InsiderNJ.

Sires is sitting on half a million.

Cirillo and Sires are battling with the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) still fractured in part because of the organization’s efforts to contain Nick Sacco acolyte Joey Muniz.

“Albio told Joey to stay the hell of West New York,” the source told InsiderNJ.

He wants to mess around in North Bergen?

Fine.

But keep out of West New York.

Muniz was undeterred, evidently.

Apparently undeterred by the controversial Muniz, others – not Roque – had reached out to Sacco, possibly to build a fusion ticket and lump Cirillo on board.

But that broke down when Cirillo announced his own ambition for the mayoralty.

That irritated Sires, himself a former long-serving mayor who wants back in the business of local governance.

Hudson looks increasingly acrimonious.

When Cirillo showed up at a recent HCDO event, apparently HCDO Chairman Anthony Vainieri wasn’t very happy about it.

He blew his Stack.

Incidentally, the overshadowing question is where kingmaking local boss state Senator (and Union City Mayor) Brian P. Strack will come down as West New York splinters.

Stack represents West New York, but he also has his own reelection bid to focus on next year and the source said he wants to put up gawdy numbers to scare away the notion that his legislative habitat is anything other than an ongoing imperial encampment.

But he can’t scare away the political winds of West New York.

“Hudson’s on fire and petitions aren’t even in!” the source exulted.

Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are a common treatment option for many forms of lower back pain and leg pain. They have been used for decades and are considered an integral part of the nonsurgical management of sciatica and lower back pain.

The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is much more effective at infecting people vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease it causes, a review of research on the subject suggests.

Research also indicates vaccination provides less protection against serious disease upon Omicron infection.

The Omicron variant, first detected in South Africa in November, now constitutes the dominant strain in the United States, according to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It comprised about 31-45 percent of infections in the week ending Dec. 18, according to the latest CDC variant surveillance data. In the week ending Jan. 1, it was already 93-97 percent, the agency projected.

Omicron appears to spread more easily, but with less severe symptoms.

1. Less hospitalization-Somebody infected with Omicron is less likely to need hospital treatment than somebody infected with an earlier version of Covid

2. Milder Hospitalization-Omicron is not just less likely to send somebody to the hospital. Even among people who need hospital care, symptoms are milder on average than among people who were hospitalized in previous waves

3. And Death-In the U.S., mortality trends typically trail case trends by about three weeks — which means the Omicron surge, which began more than a month ago, should be visible in the death counts.

During his sentencing hearing last week, Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos broke down in tears as he pleaded for a judge to forgive him for a 2019 incident in which he crashed a big rig into a group of stopped cars on a Colorado highway. The collision killed four people, injured a half-dozen and started a fire that engulfed several vehicles and melted portions of the highway.

“I would have preferred God taken me instead of them,” said Aguilera-Mederos, 26. The truck driver insisted the crash was not intentional, saying his brakes failed and he tried his best to avert disaster.
Two months earlier, a jury had convicted Aguilera-Mederos on 27 counts in connection with the incident, including four counts of vehicular homicide, six counts of first-degree assault and 10 counts of attempted first-degree assault, the Associated Press reported. Colorado District Judge A. Bruce Jones said during last week’s sentencing hearing that he was “not angry” at Aguilera-Mederos but did not have the discretion to impose a sentence lesser than 110 years in prison. Colorado law, he said, permitted him to impose only the minimum prison time for each charge, and “every crime of violence has to be sentenced consecutively,” he said.
“If I had the discretion, it would not be my sentence,” Jones said, not specifying what his preferred sentence would be.
Now, more than 4 million people have signed a Change.org petition asking Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) to grant clemency to Aguilera-Mederos or commute his sentence. The petition argues that Aguilera-Mederos did not intentionally cause the deaths and was not a criminal deserving of a lifelong prison sentence. A spokesperson for Change.org told KDVR that it was the fastest-growing petition of 2021.
A spokesperson for Polis told news outlets that the office is “aware of the issue” and the governor and his team “review each clemency application individually.”
On April 25, 2019, the brakes on Aguilera-Mederos’s semi-truck failed on a mountainous portion of Colorado’s Interstate 70, and the truck plowed into dozens of stopped cars, causing a 28-car pileup and a fire that engulfed vehicles and portions of the highway.

Former West New York Mayor Felix Roque is offering his “full-throated endorsement” of Rob Menendez, Jr. for the 8th District congressional seat.

By John Heinis/Hudson County View

“Rob Menendez, Jr. is a talented young man who was born and raised in our community. I am certain that he will bring fresh ideas and new energy to our Congress. I am happy to offer him my full-throated endorsement,” Roque told HCV.

Roque served as the mayor of West New York between 2011 and 2019 and was a big fundraiser and supporter of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Rob’s father.

Menendez, Jr., a Port Authority commissioner, is the leading candidate to replace U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8), is serving his eighth term in the House and it looks like it will be his last one.

Sires has already called Menendez, Jr. the best candidate out there to succeed him, with state Senator/Union City Mayor Brian Stack (D-33) also backing him early.

Recently, Roque teased the possibility of rematching Gabriel Rodriguez in 2023 earlier this month and the odds of him running are much more likely without Sires in the picture.

Rodriguez, the godson of Sires, and his “New Beginnings West New York” slate swept in 2019, with Roque missing a seat on the board of commissioners by 674 votes.

What Can Platelet-Rich Plasma Treat?
PRP injections are used to treat torn tendons, tendinitis, muscle injuries, arthritis-related pain, and joint injuries. They’re becoming more common for cosmetic procedures, too. For example, dermatologists and hair replacement experts use PRP injections to treat a type of hair loss called androgenic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, which affects men and women. And some dermatologists provide PRP treatments for the face. (You may have heard these called a “vampire facial.”)

Do Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections Work?
More studies are needed to see what conditions PRP can work on. So far, research shows that it speeds healing after injury or surgery for certain conditions, like torn tendons. In addition to helping injured tissue heal, some studies show PRP injections curb pain and boost mobility for people with rotator cuff injuries. PRP injections appear to reduce hair loss in people with male or female pattern baldness. But it’s not clear whether facial PRP injections ease visible signs of aging, like wrinkles and sagging skin.

It can take several weeks for PRP injections to start working. For some conditions, particularly those affecting the hair or the skin, it may take up to 6 months to notice the full effects. For some conditions, including hair loss, you may need to repeat the procedure to maintain the results.

Ah, sleep. That restorative eight hours that you may or may not be getting every night actively combats stress while keeping you healthy, alert, and strengthening your immune system. This is why there are so many gummies, salves, potions and other aids out there containing melatonin. It’s a hormone that humans naturally produce that regulates sleep. Pretty much all of us don’t get enough rest, which is why melatonin is also made artificially and sold over-the-counter as a natural sleep aid. It turns out that the supplement actually might have an unexpected perk: A new study from the Cleveland Clinic asserts that melatonin could help fight coronavirus.
The study, which was published in October in PLOS Biology, details patients who came through the clinic up to June 2020. Of that group, the patients who have previously used melatonin were almost 30% less likely to test positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This was after accounting for variables such as age, race, smoking history and various diseases.
Led by Cleveland Clinic scientists, the study sought to identify molecular pathways shared by other diseases and COVID-19. The thinking is that drugs that the Food and Drug Administration has already approved to treat these other diseases might act on these shared pathways and therefore also treat COVID-19.
The team found, for instance, that proteins associated with respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis, which are two of the main causes of death in severe COVID-19 patients, were also associated with the proteins that make up SARS-CoV-2. Through drawing such associations, the researchers identified 34 drugs already used to treat other conditions that might also treat COVID-19. Melatonin showed the most promise.
