Edward Cecil “Ed” Lowande went home to the Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2026, after a long illness. Ed was surrounded by his wife Violet and family members at Hospice House in Cape Coral, Florida. Ed was strong in his Catholic Faith and looked forward to joining the angels and saints.
Ed was born in the suburbs of Philadelphia on February 02,1931 to Cecil and Marrion (Sellman) Lowande who both preceded him in death. Ed had one sibling, Richard Lowande, who also preceded him in death in 2025. He attended Philadelphia schools and was a big Philadelphia Flyers and Eagles Fan.
Ed’s family moved to Detroit when his dad took a job at SS Kresge in 1951. Prior to the move, the United States was involved in the Korean War and Ed enlisted in the US Navy volunteering for Submarine Service. He served on three different diesel boats (submarines) and obtained the rank of Torpedoman 2nd Class (TM2 SS) and earned his DBF/Dolphins. Ed returned to Detroit after war and attempted to join the Detroit Police Department. He was told he was two young but a relative suggested he go and apply with the Detroit Fire Department. In 1953, Ed was hired after several months of waiting. He began his 27 years with the Detroit Fire Department, working mostly squads and retiring from Squad 2 in 1976. Ed’s time with the DFD resulted in many injuries on the job which eventually led to his retirement because of disabilities. Ed loved his DFD and if you have ever visited his home, he has a wall dedicated to his service as a firefighter and loved to tell stories of the fires he fought.

(Lori) Lowande, Ann Marie (Alberto) Vasquez, James (Cheryl) Lowande, William (Kimberly) Lowande, Mary Kay (Michael) Jones, Robert Lowande, and Paul Lowande. Ed was grandpa to 24 grandchildren, great-grandpa to 52 and great-great grandpa to 6, as well as many cousins and relatives. Ed loved them all and admitted he couldn’t remember all their names at 95!
Ed married Violet (Bushey) in April 1992, and they have been together in Florida for over 34 years They started their lives together in Beverly Hills, Florida and then in 1996, built a home in Cape Coral so they could be closer to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ed would be the first to tell you he made many life mistakes in his early years with his family. Once he returned to his Catholic Faith, he found new commitment and has since never wavered in his beliefs. Ed was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Cape Coral.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Cape Coral on Thursday March 5, 2026, followed by internment at Coral Ridge Cemetery.
