What Parents and Caregivers Should Know: When Is a Fever Too High?

🤒 A fever is your body’s natural response to infection, but it can be stressful. Especially when it’s your child or an older adult. Knowing what’s normal and when to seek care can help you act quickly and confidently.

🌡️ Under 100.4°F – Usually not considered a fever, can be monitored at home
🌡️ 100.4–102°F – Mild fever, often safe to watch; hydrate and rest
🌡️ 102–104°F – Can be concerning, particularly in children or the elderly; monitor closely
🌡️ 104°F+ or lasting more than 3 days – Seek medical attention promptly

Watch for Warning Signs:
• Persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
• Severe headache or neck stiffness
• Rash, confusion, or unusual drowsiness
• Trouble breathing or signs of dehydration (dry lips, no urine for several hours)
• Seizures triggered by fever

🧠 Concussion Awareness Day

A concussion is a type of brain injury that can happen after a fall, a blow to the head, or even a strong jolt to the body. Symptoms aren’t always obvious right away.

It's important to know what to watch for:
• Headache or pressure in the head
• Dizziness or balance problems
• Nausea or vomiting
• Blurred or double vision
• Sensitivity to light or sound
• Confusion, trouble concentrating, or feeling “foggy”
• Changes in mood, behavior, or sleep

If you or your child has a head injury and notice these symptoms (even hours later), seek medical attention immediately. Concussions need proper evaluation and rest to heal.

⚠️ When in doubt, get checked out. Your brain is worth protecting. ⚠️

❗ First Aid Tips Everyone Should Know ❗

1️⃣ Cuts & Scrapes:
Wash your hands, rinse the wound with clean water, and apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to stop the bleeding. Use an antibiotic ointment and cover with a sterile bandage. Change the bandage daily or if it gets wet or dirty.

2️⃣ Burns
Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for 10 to 20 minutes, but do NOT use ice as it will only damage skin tissue. Cover with a sterile, non-stick dressing and seek medical attention for large or severe burns.

3️⃣ Nosebleeds
Sit upright, lean forward slightly, and pinch the soft part of your nose for 10 minutes without checking. Avoid blowing or picking your nose for several hours afterward.

4️⃣ Sprains & Strains
Rest the injured area, ice for 10 to 20 minutes every hour, compress with an elastic bandage but not too tightly, and elevate above heart level when possible.

5️⃣ Choking
If they can nod yes and can't speak or breathe when asked if they are choking, perform the Heimlich maneuver. Stand behind, wrap arms around their waist, and thrust inward and upward just above the belly button. Do this until the object is expelled. Call 911 if the person becomes unconscious.

6️⃣ Insect Bites
Remove the stringer the with edge of a credit card and wash the area. Apply a cold pack and use antihistamine cream for itching. Come into the urgent care if there's swelling of the face, lips, or difficulty breathing.

When in doubt? Get it checked! Even small injuries can lead to bigger problems if ignored. If pain worsens, bleeding doesn't stop, or signs of infection appear, get medical attention.

⚠️ Signs of infection? Redness, swelling, pus, and fever. ⚠️

📢 Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

Here are a few daily habits that can make a big difference for your mental health:
1️⃣ Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep.
2️⃣ A 10 to 15 minute walk can boost your mood tremendously.
3️⃣ Call or meet with your friends and/or loved ones regularly.
4️⃣ Take short breaks throughout the day to relax your mind.
5️⃣ Step away from the news or social media when feeling overwhelmed.
6️⃣ Talking to a healthcare provider or a counselor is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Your mind is a key part of your health. Take care of it daily! 🧠

🚗 When a Road Trip Turns Rough… We’ve Got Your Back!

End-of-summer and Labor Day weekend often mean road trips, family outings, and long hours on the road. While these adventures do create great memories, they also bring unexpected health hiccups. (Minor cuts from a picnic, scrapes from playgrounds, motion sickness, or even heat exhaustion from spending time outdoors in the Mississippi sun.)

Here are a few tips that can help keep your family safe and comfortable while traveling:
🩹 Pack a first aid kit in your car for emergencies
💧 Stay hydrated and bring plenty of water and healthy snacks
🏃‍♂️ Take breaks to stretch and avoid fatigue
👀 Watch for signs of dehydration or heat stress, especially in children and seniors

Even with the best planning, accidents happen. If your weekend adventures leave you or your loved ones with cuts, sprains, or sudden illness, Hometown Urgent Care & Family Practice Clinic is here to help—fast, friendly, and close to home.

New school year, new routine! But is your teen’s sleep schedule keeping up?

📚 Teens need 8–10 hours of quality sleep a night, yet studies show many get far less during the school year. Sleep affects everything from concentration and mood to immune health and growth.

Here are a few quick tips for better back-to-school sleep hygiene:
🌙 Set a consistent bedtime and wake time—even on weekends
📵 Limit screens at least 30 minutes before bed
🧠 Encourage a wind-down routine (reading, journaling, no homework in bed!)
💡 Keep the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet

If your child is having trouble sleeping or shows signs of fatigue, anxiety, or trouble focusing, our family practice provider is here to help evaluate and guide you through it. Health isn’t just physical, it’s whole-person.
