March always feels like a turning point here on the farm. The days are getting longer, the snow is slowly melting, and there’s a sense that everything is beginning to wake up again. The goats are enjoying the extra daylight, and we’re starting to think about all the small signs of spring that will arrive in the coming weeks.

In the soap kitchen, that same feeling of renewal has us reaching for bright, uplifting scents- especially citrus. Lemon, orange, and other sunny blends have a way of making everyday routines feel fresh again. Our Lemon Sage Soap is made with all natural exfoliants. Paired with creamy goat’s milk and hydrating oils, this bar will bring a little extra brightness to your day!

Did you know that all of our soaps are made with goat’s milk from the goats here on the farm? Goat’s milk makes soap so much more gentle and soothing- so it’s perfect for sensitive skin.

There are a few different methods to making soap, but we use what is called the “cold process” method. It’s the oldest technique and we love it because we can make our soaps from scratch and can have complete control over what ingredients are used.

Soap is made through a chemical reaction between an alkaline substance (like lye!) diluted with a liquid (we use goats milk!), and a vegetable or animal fat. When the right ratios are put into play- the ingredients saponify when blended together, producing soap!

We use a combination of vegetable fats, such as olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and others, because they help to keep the skin hydrated. We also infuse oils ourselves, using botanicals we’ve grown here on the farm- like calendula and chamomile! This creates a more nutrient rich oil for our soaps. Ingredients are a huge consideration for us when formulating products. We use only high quality, natural ingredients to create our products and never use harsh chemicals, additives or fragrance oils.

Did you know that different oils can make for different bars of soap? Oil type, quality and quantity can help you control properties such as how hard or soft a bar of soap is, or the quality of the lather- will it be a big bubbly lather or a soft creamy lather? One oil that we love using in our soaps is jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is unique in soap making and skincare because it isn’t technically an oil- it’s a liquid wax!

Jojoba oil has long been used in skincare for its anti-inflammatory, healing, and nourishing properties. It’s very soothing and helps slow aging, or improve skin elasticity. In soap making, jojoba oil helps to create a long-lasting, harder bar of soap, and a longer lasting lather. It also makes for a bar of soap that helps condition your skin- not dry it out.

Our formulations are unique and crafted here in our soap kitchen through much trial and error. We take great care in the ingredients we use! To learn more about our products, process and ingredients, tap the link in our bio!
