Celebrating another new program at SCHC!
Our residents enjoyed another new program today. Our Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Elizabeth introduced a guided mediation program this afternoon. Meditation is defined as “the act of giving you attention to only one thing, either as religious activity or as a way of becoming calm and relaxed.” (Merriam Webster Dictionary.)

Our residents have expressed interest in more programs that focus on overall health. As we explore different forms of wellness, we understand that it is a path that includes the mind, body, and spirit.

“I came to this program because I am really sad and I am hopeful that this will help me feel better when I leave” resident updated and said “I truly needed this today and it helped me feel better”

Celebrating a new program at SCHC!
Our residents at SCHC enjoy music. While we have a variety of musical performers, we discovered that we have a strong community of those who love opera and classical music. Including residents who have composed music and played a variety of instruments. This morning, we had 17 residents who enjoyed an hour of musical exploration and music history.

Our resident volunteer Tom hosted the event and shared history on the music choices of Luciano Pavarotti (La bohème, and Fedora) and Ludwig van Beethoven (Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.)

Our staff discovered that those who “love” this music genre, “feel” it differently than other forms of music. We noticed residents listening deeply with their eyes shut, moving their hands in a manner of conducting and in perfect timing to the beat of the music. It was a beautiful experience… We have resident requests for additional composers and opera singers for future events. It has been voted in as a new permanent program on our monthly calendar

Our residents were given a special performance this morning. Karen Liot Hill, District Two, Executive Councilor visited us and gave a wonderful holiday performance and sing along. It was a wonderful morning to see our residents singing, tapping their toes, and being moved to tears with certain songs as we spent time together. Thank you, Karen, for spending time with us at SCHC!

Today Therapeutic Rec held the first Happy Hour in the Great Room. Residents were able to come down mingle, sip on a nice alcoholic beverage, and enjoy some good conversation and snack on some Cheese and Crackers. We even had a resident give us a round of applause and thanked us for this wonderful event.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event successful.
