Sheri Collinsworth Cobarruvias, PhD, LPC-S, NCC

Sheri Collinsworth Cobarruvias, PhD, LPC-S, NCC I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Supervisor, Speaker, and Counselor Educator. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families from various walks of life. I have worked with clients/ patients in out-patient treatment, partial out-patient treatment, in-patient residential treatment and in-patient acute settings. I have also worked with at-risk youth looking to make a new life for themselves and parolees

and probationers looking to make a turn for the better in their lives. I am experienced in working with family units, couples, and individuals. I am formally trained in working with couples, individuals, and families, as I am a graduate of the Marriage and Family Therapy program of Our Lady of the Lake University. I use various techniques in my practice to help build trust and rapport with my clients. Such techniques employed include, but are not limited to: art and play, cognitive-behavioral, and solution-focused theory, in addition to aspects of Christian counseling. I enjoy helping my clients find a new perspective for themselves; the moment they realize that they can make better choices for themselves or that things really are not as bad they seem. My role as a therapist is to be an empathetic listener and build trust and rapport through our relationship, providing a safe environment for the transmission of intimately private information to be disclosed, and begin the process of healing. I believe the client has the answers within them; all they have to do is be still and listen for these answers. As an unbiased listener, I hope to help the client find these answers, and in so doing, discover clarity and hope. I began my practice as an independent practitioner on the southside of San Antonio in March 2009. I am now seeing clients on the northeast side of San Antonio in Universal City. I am conveniently located near Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, and Live Oak.

Our series, "Talking with Children About Death," proceeds with a vital reminder: Avoid assuming that children are too young to comprehend death.

When addressing the topic of death with children, it's crucial to recognize that even young ones can grasp the concept to varying degrees. While they may not fully understand the complexities, they can still sense the emotions and changes around them. Dismissing their ability to comprehend death can lead to confusion and feelings of isolation. At the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas, we concentrate on the importance of acknowledging children's capacity for understanding. By approaching conversations about death with honesty and age-appropriate explanations, we empower children to process their emotions and ask questions. 💛

I’m a little late, but August 6 marked 10 years since I opened my practice! It’s been a wonderful experience and I am so thankful for all of those who have supported me on this journey. I love working in the mental health field and I am honored to be there for my clients during those difficult times. 😊

Take a moment to reflect on the journey that has brought you to where you are today. Look back at the highs and lows, successes, and failures. Examine your progress and assess what changes need to be made in order to reach your goals. By taking inventory of your life, you can gain clarity and insight into the future. You are capable of amazing things and taking time to look back at where you have been can be a powerful tool for continuing on your journey.

My Story

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families from various walks of life. I have worked with clients in out-patient treatment, partial out-patient treatment, in-patient residential treatment, and in-patient acute psychiatric settings. I have worked with at-risk youth looking to make a new life for themselves, parolees and probationers looking to make a turn for the better in their lives, and patients suffering from psychosis who need clarity in their lives.

I am experienced in working with family units, couples, and individuals. I am formally trained in working with couples, individuals, and families; as I am a graduate of the Marriage and Family Therapy program of Our Lady of the Lake University.

I began my private practice originally in March 2009 as an independent practitioner on the southside of San Antonio and later moved to the northeast side of San Antonio to Universal City in June 2010. I took a 2 year hiatus from private practice to get married and further my career and develop my skills as a practitioner at Laurel Ridge Treatment Center. I opened my full time practice, again in Universal City, servicing the northeast side of San Antonio and surrounding communities of Schertz, Cibolo, Converse, Live Oak, Kirby, and Selma on August 6, 2013. I am also an approved LPC-Supervisor, with nearly five years experience, for counseling interns to help them grow their skills and understanding of what it means to be a Licensed Professional Counselor.
