We have an announcement!

We are redoing our Facebook. Currently, it is under our vice president's personal Facebook account. When she graduates, (this June!) we'll need the next cohort to be able to access our MLS club Facebook. So, we're creating a new account, reposting our pictures and information, and deleting this one.

We will not be reposting the fundraiser announcements and pictures, since we're done fundraising and all the brochures we posted are expired. The new cohort will have their own fundraisers, so stay tuned!

We made it through 3 weeks of the semester, and we've already done a bunch of cool stuff. Below is an E-test, done in microbiology labs to find out how much of an antibiotic is needed to take care of a bacterial infection. The plate is covered with bacteria and an antibiotic strip of paper is added. You can see where the antibiotic prevented it from growing. The numbers tell you what concentration is needed, which tells the doctor and pharmacy how to dose the medicine!

Our club president, Casey Baranski, is in charge of ou Instagram page and she's doing a great job! Her most recent creation is an adorable post about an MLS Barbie, to honor the Barbie movie.

P.S. If you played with Barbies as a kid, check out the history behind them! It's super interesting.

We're done with blood analysis for now, and we've moved onto urine ๐Ÿ˜ฌ a little gross but so interesting and so important in diagnosing patients. Urinalysis helps diagnose and treat diabetes, kidney stones, hemolytic diseases, liver disease, kidney disease, and much more.

Below is the view I had through my microscope on Thursday. Its a urine wet mount, meaning the urine is concentrated and then placed right onto the microscope slide. When the professor added a polarizing lens, we could see the incredible colors and angles of the urine cystals.

TIME FOR ANOTHER FUNDRAISER!

This time, we're selling candles from Coyer Candle Co. They're based in Midland, Michigan, and every candle is soy-based and hand-poured. Besides candles, we'll also be selling wax melts and car fresheners. Contact one of our club members to buy!

THIS MONDAY!

Our fundraiser with G's Pizzeria is coming up! On Monday, March 20, come to G's in Saginaw and enjoy some pizza. If you present the flyer below, 15% of your bill will be donated to the MLS Club of SVSU!

We're raising money to attend an MLS conference in the fall. The more money we raise, the less each student has to pay out of pocket. Plus, it will leave some money leftover for next year's students. Help us attend! The conference is put on by the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science.

Members of the club will be handing out flyers, and they'll be posted at SVSU as well as local hospitals and labs.

Below is a classic example of Sickle Cell Anemia. Due to a mutation in their DNA, people with this disease have red blood cells shaped like sickles rather than discs. This makes the cells much less flexible and much less effective at carrying oxygen.

Below is a blood smear that the MLS students use to practice in the hematology lab. The sickle cells are long and have pointed ends, while the normal cells are round and have a fuzzy white center.

There are some other abnormal cells in this picture besides the sickles, like the immature red blood cell near the center.

Below are 3 examples of microbiology tests done in the clinical laboratory. These tubes contain growth medium for certain bacteria, as well as specific sugars to help differentiate which organism is which.

From right to left: Urea Agar Slant, Triple Sugar Iron Agar Slant, and Citrate Slant.

These pictures were taken yesterday during our clinical microbiology lab!

The first picture is of gram-positive coccus, a type of bacteria with a spherical shape, a thick cell wall, one cell membrane, and a purple gram stain. After that is a gram-positive bacillus, with the same characteristics and a rod shape. Examples of each are Staphylococcus aureus (responsible for many Staph infections) and Bacillus anthracis (responsible for Anthrax).

Welcome to the official page of the SVSU MLS Club! We'll be using this page to promote fundraising, raise awareness for the medical lab profession, get new members. In the near future, this club will be open to all SVSU students who are MLS majors. Feel free to message us with questions!

Below is an example of a typical day as an MLS: examining a peripheral blood smear. The numerous pink circles are red blood cells, which carry oxygen. They're surrounded by a couple white blood cells to help with infection and cleanup. Those two tiny purple splotches are platelets, which are responsible for blood clotting. Can you name any abnormal cells in this smear?
