In April 2023, 18-year-old Marlon was enjoying his last months in high school before his anticipated graduation. He had not been feeling well but didn’t give it much thought as he was a seasoned high school athlete. This was until he started to have a cough, fever, and significant trouble breathing one night. He was immediately taken to the hospital by his family where doctors found fluid in his lungs and his heart was too weak to pump blood and support the body. Doctors later told Marlon and his family that he had cardiogenic shock due to inflammation of his heart. After a pump machine was implanted, his heart started working better but he was still very ill with dangerously low blood pressure. He developed an anterior spinal cord infarct at the levels of T9-T12, a condition in which the front of the spinal cord does not get sufficient blood flow. Another way to describe this condition is a stroke within the spinal cord which causes paralysis. This led Marlon to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Rehabilitation.
Now, 18 months later and back to work and some walking, Marlon shared these words of wisdom to others facing large challenges:
"Aunque parezca imposible, nada lo es mientras te esfuerces al máximo y confíes en el proceso”–Marlon
("Even if it seems impossible, nothing is as long as you try your best and trust the process")
