Maximizing nutrient density should be the primary goal of our diet.

Why?

Because deficiencies of any of these essential nutrients can contribute to the development of chronic disease and even shorten our lifespan.

So, instead of focusing on CALORIES, focus on NUTRIENTS. That simple shift alone could make a world of a difference. 🙌🏼

When we talk about nutrients, we refer to both macro (protein, fat, carbs) and micro (all vitamins, minerals, and other compounds).
Since many people understand macronutrients, the more important piece to emphasize are micronutrients.

Nutrient deficiency is widespread in the US.. nearly 1/3 of Americans are at risk for at least one vitamin deficiency or anemia, with hundreds of thousands of people at risk for multiple deficiencies. 😣

What happens when we’re nutrient deficient?

✖️pale skin
✖️fatigue
✖️weakness
✖️hair loss
✖️brittle nails
✖️dry skin

The list goes on. Nutrients are what our bodies need to operate correctly. ✔️ The body doesn’t understand calories, that’s just a way for us to measure how much we’re eating.

Unfortunately, the story doesn’t end there. There is also something called bioavailability, which refers to the portion of nutrients that our body actually absorbs and utilizes. And it's different depending on the food.

🥬 Plants in general tend to have a lower bioavailability score. One main reason is because they have anti-nutrients, which are compounds that the plant uses to chemically defend itself but that inhibits our bodies from absorbing some of the nutrients.

If you swipe to the last page of this post you’ll see a list of the foods that have the highest nutrient-density scores. Unfortunately, this doesn't include the bioavailability of those foods, but it still helps.

Here's what you can focus on to get started:

Eat a wide variety of animal and plant foods and maximize the nutrient density of every bite of food you put in your body. Eat organic to avoid toxins, and minimize processed foods (bread, pasta, crackers, etc.). This will cause all other important aspects of your diet to fall into place. 👏🏼

PS: When you up your nutrients, you'll naturally feel more full and therefore, eat less. 😉

Hey! So excited to finally be expanding to Facebook - I spend most of my time over on Instagram :) Just to briefly introduce myself, my name is Lilly and I'm a certified holistic health coach specializing in gut health. What I've found from my own health journey and that of those I've helped, is that almost every symptom we experience can be traced back to poor gut health. Here are some of the most common:

- Skin issues (acne, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, etc.)
- Digestive issues (bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, etc.)
- Slowed metabolism (weight gain, high blood sugar, etc.)
- Brain fog, headaches, poor memory
- Autoimmune conditions + joint pain
- Weak immune function or overreactive immune system (allergies, asthma, food sensitivities/intolerances, etc.)
- Low energy, fatigue, poor sleep
- Hormone imbalances (PMS, low libido, mood swings)
- Anxiety + depression
- Nutritional deficiencies (thinning hair, dry skin, brittle nails, etc.)

Hippocrates said it first 2,500 years ago when he said "all disease begins in the gut". It really does... the gut is the epicenter of your health!

So, even without fancy testing, addressing the gut is the best place to start! You've got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

I currently offer a 3-month, one-on-one coaching mentorship that helps you heal yourself from the inside out using real food and lifestyle interventions.

My focus with coaching is always to empower my clients with the tools and resources they need to regain their health by listening to their bodies. It's part healing the gut, and part learning how to trust it that really guides people back to wholeness.
