According to ABC News, the Trump administration proposed a two-year time limit for recipients of Section 8 vouchers and public housing assistance. The goal was to shift public housing from a long-term safety net to a short-term boost, encouraging employment and independence.
Supporters said it would reduce dependency, cut costs, and open housing for others in need. Critics, including housing advocates and civil rights groups, argued it would harm vulnerable populations—like single mothers, the elderly, and disabled—who face barriers to stable work. They also warned it could worsen homelessness and ignore the affordable housing crisis.
Though the policy was never federally enacted, it reflected the administration’s broader push for public assistance reform and continues to shape the debate.
