Teaching Tuesday ❄️🐴
With the recent ice storm here in Georgia, many people have been asking how horses stay warm during harsh winter weather!
Horses are incredibly resilient and have some amazing natural ways to protect themselves from the cold:
• Winter coats: Horses grow a thick winter coat that traps warm air close to their bodies. When their hair stands up (called piloerection), it acts like built-in insulation.
• Calorie burning = warmth: Digesting hay creates heat, so horses actually stay warmer when they have constant access to forage.
• Movement matters: Gentle movement helps maintain circulation and body temperature, which is why turnout (when safe) is important.
• Shelter & care: Windbreaks, dry footing, and extra monitoring during icy conditions help keep horses safe and comfortable.
Even during extreme weather, our horses continue to show just how strong and adaptable they are 💙
We’re thankful for safe barns, caring hands, and these amazing partners who give so much every day.
