As we protect our mental health and cope with uncertainty it is more important than ever that we be there for each other and take steps to prevent su***de. Just like CPR can save lives, so can QPR. When kids are struggling with anxiety, allowing them to experience their emotions can help them learn that they are harmless, and they can manage them on their own. Often we feel pulled to step in and do something to help relieve their anxiety. While well intentioned, this sends the message that children can’t handle the situation on their own, and it helps them to avoid the emotions all together. By making supportive statements and not accommodating for anxious behaviors we can teach children they can handle big emotions on their own (even if it takes some time at first). Remember, this is not a magic spell, and these statements must be made over and over again before children begin to believe it for themselves.

Homeschool tip: Focus on 2. Many parents are concerned about their children falling behind or falling further behind during these times of homeschooling. The amount of resources available to us can actually be more overwhelming than helpful. Instead of trying to do a million different things, try to focus on doing a couple of things really well. Try putting the majority of your efforts in two areas, one area your child is struggling in and one area your child is passionate about. By making more space for an area your child is passionate about (i.e. guitar, swimming, or drawing), you will create a self-directed learner. This can gain you more buy-in during the times your child is needing to focus on struggle areas. It can also provide you with time for yourself to accomplish items on your agenda.

Quote of the Week! I hope everyone finds some time this week to enjoy the magic of music. I am currently annoying my family by singing Hamilton songs non-stop (see what I did there).
