After putting all my effort into creating a space for our yoga community, I have been guided down a different path. At the end of 2023, the universe surprised me with the greatest blessing of my life. And so, I have been led to two new business decisions to help accommodate my new journey of motherhood and still make the most of my offering to the community.

First, yoga classes will be suspended, and the doors to the studio location will be closed permanently. This decision was not easy, but it was necessary to focus on my true calling, which is Āyurveda. I will be devoting my attention to wellness advising services, which will now be offered virtually!

On that note, my second announcement honors the spirit of collaboration and community that is at the heart of all healing. Starting in March, I will be joining as a network provider. With their support, I'm excited to introduce the science of Āyurveda to all of the Coastal Bend—and what better way to start than with the spring cleanse! (Spaces will be limited.)

Stay tuned for more updates and new posts with resources and recipes to guide you through your health and back to nature. 🌱

As we approach the new year, we feel the full force of Vata season. The ether and air elements are pushing and moving the elements within and without. Windy, grey days make it hard to get out of bed at times.

It might seem tempting to combat the coziness with an extra dose of caffeine, but that could aggravate Vata even further. The bitter taste we love in coffee is comprised of the air and ether elements—the same elements of Vata.

The bitter taste is the most detoxifying of all six tastes. It activates digestive enzymes, stimulates peristalsis, increases metabolism, burns fat, and reduces sugar cravings. However, a little bitter goes a long way. Someone with a Vata constitution or current state of imbalance may find the drying, cleansing action of that extra cup of coffee in the thick of Vata season sends their system over the edge.

Instead, take a hint from nature. Give yourself permission to snooze a little longer in the morning and give your adrenals some well-deserved rest. Make it a point to have your last meal earlier, make it to bed earlier, and nurture your system. Your body will thank you and you can indulge in the bitter taste come spring, when we use it to balance the elements of Kapha season. 💜

Āyurvedic nutrition is based on the 6 tastes rather than protein, carbs, and fat. The 6 tastes are manifestations of the elements and correlate to the balance of elements in an individual's constitution (dosha).

Taste is the body's way of communicating what it needs. Awareness and detoxification of ama (toxins) in the body is the aim of Āyurveda, using daily cleansing practices—dinacharya.

Only with a healthy metabolic fire (agni) can food be properly digested and assimilated. In Āyurveda, digestion is the cornerstone of health and our main line of defense against disease.

Healing often reveals where we put our power outside of ourselves.

We all suffer, and we all have a choice in the narrative we tell ourselves about our suffering. Limiting reality to a dualistic perspective of subject and object creates a stark opposition between ourselves and everything we experience. This illusion of separation only reinforces the belief that life is happening to us and not from us.

In yoga, samādhi is the union of subject and object, the realization that boundaries are only limited to the external world and everything we seek is already inside us.

Every experience is a gift because every experience has a lesson, even if we can't see it yet. By cultivating awareness, the mind spends less time in the past and future, and we come to rest in the present. When we abide in presence, we welcome bliss. 🪷

Terms like health, success, and happiness have been imposed on us throughout our entire lives. They all mean something different depending on who you ask. What is healthy for one person may be detrimental to another. One person's joy may be another's anguish.

Why then do we feel the need to adhere to concepts that can not be limited by definition? These concepts are defined through experience--through knowing. Only when one feels happiness do they know happiness.

The Ayurvedic definition of health starts with awareness because no other aspect of health can be experienced without it. Awareness is the light of consciousness, guiding us through our experience.

To be established in self is to be aware of our truth, our needs, our limitations, to honor the self, to be united in body and mind, to live intuitively... from being to feeling
to doing
to loving
to speaking
to seeing
to understanding.

Awareness leads to understanding and understanding leads to liberation. 🪬

The Doshas are combinations of the elements in our bodies. Vata dosha is comprised of ether and air, pitta dosha is fire and water, and kapha dosha is made up of earth and water. Each of us has all 3, but to varying degrees, every individual has a predominance or tendency towards one, usually two.

Vata is responsible for all movement in the body, and the pattern of imbalance is deficiency. Pitta is the dosha of transformation and governs our metabolic fire (agni), with an inflammation pattern of imbalance. Kapha provides the structure and lubrication of the body, whose pattern of imbalance is accumulation.

By honoring the cycles and seasons of nature, we can correct our current state of imbalance to bring the doshas back into balance, restore proper functioning of the body's channels, and maintain longevity. 🌱
