"We will find no way out of this misery for as long as we try to solve it... Our only way out is to understand that this misery cannot be made to disappear; it must be endured and transformed. Édouard Glissant, a French poet of Caribbean descent, called such an attitude the "thought of the trembling."...The thinker of the trembling accepts ruptures; they make him into a creator and not a cynic. The thought of the trembling is thereby also a maternal thought, a thought that comforts, rather than clear-cuts, in its acts of creation.

To maintain balance means to create. "Balance" is an artistic concept. It describes creative tension with future potential. Balance is a transient equilibrium within a dynamic that imagines more life and acts on its behalf. Balance aims for an ecological prosperity that attempts to mediate between the needs of its participants without succumbing to the illusion that a complete, unambiguous win-win situation is attainable. Abiding a dilemma with style, dignity, and poetry is thus a part of maintaining balance. Maintaining balance — acting in moderation — is synonymous with being totally aware without attempting to exercise control.

Mystics such as Richard Rohr call such an attitude "nondual thinking": thinking that tries to connect with what is – not by neutralizing opposites but by gaining more reality from them. This path leads from a knowledge of the world to a practice of increasing, protecting, and partaking in its aliveness. Like an ecosystem, this path contains the simultaneity of lightness and darkness without censoring either. Richard Rohr calls this "practicing heaven now." Heaven now — this is not the Nirvana that politicians, esoteric thinkers, and technocrats all fantasize about. This is reality in all of its beautiful complications."

When I read this passage from Andreas Weber's Matter & Desire about a month ago, I immediately thought of Temperance. It has been rattling around in my brain ever since. Rereading it tonight, it feels like the perfect interpretation for this card. "The thought of the trembling." I love that.

How do you feel about it?

"Doomsday is close at hand
I'll book the marching band
To play as you speak..."

This song made itself known to me a few weeks ago and Judgment immediately came to mind. Does that ever happen to you? Things link back to cards for me all the time. I have a back catalog in my head of posts like this one I want to share with you.

Maybe I'll get started on that.

What do you think of this pairing?

12 Magical Days: Day 12!

"There is only one truth,
one law, and one way.
Make justice supreme
and let come what may.

Within us lies a truth
that all of us hear.
And within us its killer:
corruption and fear.

From the righteous path
we must never stray
else our future and our soul
may be cast away."

Whenever I see Justice, I think of what we commonly call Karma. What Goes Around, Comes Around. Justice is a card of getting what you deserve, no more or less. Notice how the figure on the card holds the scales, weighing a heart against a feather like Anubis deciding our soul's fate.

How does the idea of that make you feel? Why? Do you have good karma coming your way, or bad? What are you going to do about it? Sometimes we can right a wrong, no matter how long it's been. Even just owning what we did can go a long way; it's never too late to make amends.

This card can also be a reminder that Justice comes for others, not us alone. If there is someone that has harmed or mistreated you, take comfort in the knowledge that they will reap what they sow. It might not be today or tomorrow, but it will happen.

Now, this is not a call to vengeance or spite. Just the opposite. Allowing ourselves to trust in the balancing act of the cosmos means freeing ourselves from things like revenge, malice, and bitterness. When we can let go of the impulse to punish ourselves and each other, we move toward healing.

This also doesn't mean we can't hold one another accountable or call out injustices when we see them. Notice the figure on this card is not blindfolded, like many figures of Justice are. This Justice is clear-seeing, she does not turn to look away. Though she might be part ostrich, she's not burying her head in the sand.

In what ways do you stand for a more just world? Where can you walk your talk a little more? What apologies could you extend, what grievances could you relinquish? Justice doesn't demand that you do it perfectly, just that you do what's right. ⚖

12 Magical Days: Day 11

"Merry we meet
and merry we part.

This union made full
a once empty heart."

From the Ace yesterday to the Two today! Talk about growth.

Like the poem says, the Two of Cups is a signifier of relationships. Fulfilling, reciprocal, egalitarian relationships (Sea horses! The males carry the babies! Love that for them.) It's a card of soul bonds, if you believe in that. People who you connect with on an intimate level, who you can share your whole self with. And not just romantically! Friends and family members can have Two of Cups relationships too.

Who fills your cup? Who allows you to pour into theirs? Relationships based on reciprocity mean being comfortable with both giving and receiving. We all want to feel that our loved ones can rely on us. Are you an over-giver? Do you tend towards hyper-independence? Don't deprive the people in your life the chance to be there for you! In the same vein, look at the relationships where you receive more than you return. How can you even out the balance?

None of this is to imply that relationships should be transactional. In fact, Two of Cups can warn about emotional enmeshment and codependence, where one or both people are overempashizing the other's needs instead of taking accountability for their own. Truly intimate, respectful relationships of all kinds support both parties individuality. They are a place of mutual caregiving and connection, where we can trust each other to take care of and advocate for ourselves - we don't need to do it for one another or make it anyone else's responsibility.

Are they any connections in your life that have veered in an unhealthy direction? The Two of Cups tells us that the union of two people is just that: two whole, complete, realized individuals joining together, meeting each other where they're at. It is okay to maintain your individuality in your close relationships. With this card, it's encouraged. The Two of Cups is less "you complete me" and more "this is me, completely". 💞

12 Magic Days: Day 10

"Your cup shall never empty
and you shall never want for more.

Your feelings are what sustains you
and they are what you pour."

Happy New Year's Eve! Today we get a big ol' giant cup, the Ace of Cups. A card of overwhelming feelings, new beginnings, abundance, and celebration. How appropriate!

Tonight, this card feels like raising a glass to toast ourselves and one another. The Ace of Cups is a sign of blessings to come, a recognition of all the good we deserve, a portend of potential love, peace, and prosperity.

With the year coming to a close, the Ace of Cups beckons us into 2024 with unbridled optimism and hope, reminding us that as long as we follow our hearts and trust our intuitions, we can't go wrong.

Take tonight to savor how far you've come and dream about what comes next. It's bound to be good. Cheers! 🥂

12 Magical Days: Day 9

"It's easy to long for the wild
when you're safe and at home

it's harder to stay brave
when you're out and alone."

The Two of Wands is about exploration. Or, more accurately, the plans you make before you embark on a journey of exploration. When we feel safe and secure, it's easier to stretch ourselves, envision our futures, and try new things. Just as these kittens know they are protected and cared for and so can engage their curiosity, so too can we. It is easier to take leaps of faith when we know a soft landing awaits us.

Who or what in your life makes you feel brave? Encourages your daring? Makes you feel like you could take on the world, and will support you even if you fail? Who schemes with you? What lights a fire under you? As we approach the New Year, embrace your optimism and ambition. Dream big!

On the other hand, sometimes we daydream, make fantastic plans, and get too big for our britches as a means of escape. Maybe we lack that security we so desire, and so we imagine all the ways we could go out and find it, when really it's cultivated from within. Confidence and stability come from recognizing and accepting yourself and your limits, not disregarding them in a never ending chase of The Perfect Self. Don't chase a fantasy version of you in 2024, lean into the discovery of the Real You, instead. 🐈‍⬛

12 Magical Days: Day 8

"I play for victory
and I need no dice

as long as I win
I don't care who I slice."

More Swords! This is our third one in a row. The Five of Swords is a cut-throat card, no holds barred. It's about victory no matter the cost, coming out on top even if you have to burn every bridge that got you there. It can mean going to bat for what you believe in, standing up for what's right even when everyone is against you, or finally giving a good old fashioned bully what's coming to them. (Notice the defiance of the lower bird, facing his oppressor. This can be a card of the underdog fighting back.)

It can also mean that *you're* being the bully. It's a warning about rigidity, egotism, and toxic power plays. Is this the hill you want to die on? If you get your way but it costs you every relationship you have, will it be worth it? Are you fighting fair? Be really honest with yourself when the Five of Swords shows up: it hints at mindgames and manipulative tactics. Watch out for these behaviors in yourself and others even (and especially) when the conflict you're engaging in is a righteous one. It can seem justified to go low when the stakes are high.

Don't betray yourself or abandon your values if conflict arises soon. If someone is provoking you into a battle of wills, feel free to decline the invitation. And don't hesitate to speak up for yourself if someone tries to make you feel small. 🦅

12 magical days: Day 7

"I wander for words
and for knowledge I lust

yet in my haste for the truth
I must learn to distrust."

Ah, the Page of Swords. A delightfully curious, endlessly fascinated and fascinating person. Someone with intellectual thirst, who can carry on a conversation for hours. They have a very youthful energy, which means they can also be prone to naiveté, tend to gossip, and hog that same conversation they're carrying. They have a little growing up to do. As the poem implies, they need to practice the art of skepticism, learn not to believe (or repeat!) everything they hear.

Do you know anyone like that? Do you recognize any of those traits in yourself? We can all act from a place of immaturity and insecurity at times - say something we can't take back, poke our noses where they don't belong (we're just curious!), or forget that while we might be the main character in our own stories, there are an infinite number of other stories playing out around us all the time.

For me, the Page of Swords is a gentle nudge to Act My Age. While it is wonderful to cultivate and maintain a youthful wonder for life, is it also important to balance that with the wisdom wrought by experience.

There is a saying: "When we know better, we do better." The Page of Swords doesn't know any better, but you do. Don't let them get the best of you. 🗡

12 Magical Days: Day 6

"If I fight will I fail?
If I take flight will I fall?

As I worry about these questions
my monsters loom tall."

The poem for the Two of Swords is short but clear. This is a card of indecision, contemplation, and anxiety. Two owls loom over a mouse, who is frozen with fear. The little creature knows she should move, that not to is certain death, but she can't seem to make up her mind on which way to go.

When have you felt that way? What decisions in your life currently feel too big to face, to perilous to act upon? In what ways do you overthink things as a way of putting them off? Sometimes we tell ourselves we want to get something just right, but really we're avoiding doing anything.

The Two of Swords teaches us that not making a choice is still making a choice. It is a reminder that we still have time to act, before a decision is thrust upon us, before the owls swoop down.

And try not to forget the limitations of binary, zero-sum thinking. If there's something pressing in your life these days, you likely have more choices at your disposal than you think. There are options beyond 'fail' and 'fall', after all. ⚔

12 Magical Days: Day 5

"The milk light of moon
reveals that which we fear,
her shadows are tricky
and their purpose unclear.

The Moon summons up
that which we dream,
but the shadows it casts
hide what needs to be seen.

Its inky blackness
may hide the key
but in releasing our demons
we set our inner self free."

How fitting to get The Moon on the day of the Cancer Full Moon! Here we see a luminescent dragon amidst a swarm of midnight wolves, underneath a full moon. The wolves almost look like they're made of water, or wind. Though they seem threatening, I can't help but wonder if they're real.

I think the poem that accompanies this card is telling us that they might not be real, but instead be "tricky shadows". As much as The Moon is about trusting our intuitions, it's also about being wise enough to tell the difference between intuition and paranoia. A key lesson of The Moon is that Feelings Aren't Facts. That doesn't mean what you feel isn't real - just the fact that you're experiencing it means it is - but maybe the fears you have around you feelings or the story you tell yourself about what they mean deserves to be questioned, examined under the light of day.

Even the most comforting and familiar of places can be eerily unrecognizable at night, under the gaze of the Moon. This includes your inner landscape. Tonight, while she is Full, remember that her light illumonates and it distorts. Allow your emotions to wash over you like the tides she rules, remembering just as they flood in, they will ebb out again. 🌕
