Ready to Empower Your Birth? Let’s Do This! 💪✨
Labor prep isn’t just about physical strength—it’s about preparing your mind, body, and environment to welcome your baby in the most natural way possible. Here’s how to feel confident and in control when the big day comes:

🧘‍♀️ Mindset Matters: Practice daily affirmations to build your confidence. Saying things like « I trust my body to birth my baby » or « I am calm and capable » can shift your mindset from anxious to empowered.

📖 Birth Education: The more you know about the birth process, the more empowered you’ll feel. Take the time to learn about what’s happening in your body and what to expect during labor. You’ll feel more prepared and in control.

🥑 Fuel Your Body Right:

Magnesium-rich foods (like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds) can help relax your muscles and reduce tension.
Healthy fats (think avocado and salmon) are essential for hormone production and maintaining your energy during labor.
Dates: Studies show eating dates from 36 weeks can help soften the cervix and possibly shorten labor. Aim for about 6 dates per day for an extra labor boost!

🧖‍♀️ Acupuncture for Labor: Acupuncture helps your body relax, encourages cervical ripening, and can even help trigger labor when you’re ready. It’s like giving your body a gentle nudge in the right direction!

Remember, labor is a natural process that your body was made for. The more prepared and relaxed you are, the smoother it will go 🌿.
Oxytocin, the hormone of contractions (secreted in the archaic Brain) is secreetd when you feel confident ONLY. When you’re anxious or fearful, your neocortex (the thinking part of your brain) becomes more active. This inhibits oxytocin production because the neocortex and the archaic brain work in opposition.

🤱 Many new parents find that caring for a baby isn’t as instinctive as they thought. From feeding and diapering to soothing and sleep routines, there’s a lot to learn. Don’t worry—preparation and a little guidance can make all the difference!

Things that can help:

📚 Take a newborn care class BEFORE your Due date: Learn the physiological needs of a newborn: sleep, feeding, emotional needs and basic care so you feel confident right away when baby arrives.
📚 Take a breastfeeding class BEFORE your Due date. If you are breastfeeding, take the time you need to get familiar with it and feel prepared. Breastfeeding is a whole new world and there is a lot of information to know.
👶 Read books and articles: Get tips on feeding, sleep, and more.
🗣️ Talk to experienced parents: Gain practical advice from those who’ve been there. Everyone’s experience is different but you will keep the tips that resonate to you. At least you know that everything is possible and that you are not alone!
🧸 Practice baby care techniques: Diapering, swaddling, and soothing take time to master.
🤝 Build a support network: Friends, family, or a doula can provide invaluable help.
Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and take time to learn—every new parent goes through this journey! 💕

You might be wondering: “How can sticking needles in my skin help with my hormones?” Well, let me walk you through it. When an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin, it triggers a series of biological responses:

✨Nerve Stimulation: The needles stimulate sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This sends signals to the brain and central nervous system.
✨Release of Neurotransmitters and Hormones: The brain responds to these signals by releasing neurotransmitters like endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators, while serotonin helps regulate mood and sleep. These help reduce stress, which negatively impacts hormone levels and ovulation, and can lead to a more regular menstrual cycle.
✨Activation of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) Axis: The hypothalamus, a part of the brain, releases GnRH, prompting the pituitary gland to secrete luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone which are often imbalanced in women with PCOS. These hormones stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone, regulating the menstrual cycle.
✨Improved Blood Flow to Ovaries: Acupuncture increases blood flow to the ovaries, which helps nourish the ovarian follicles and can improve their function. Better blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the ovaries, supporting healthier ovulation.
✨Reduction of Insulin Resistance: Acupuncture can help reduce insulin resistance by improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin. This is crucial for women with PCOS, as reducing insulin resistance can help lower androgen levels and improve ovulation.
✨Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Acupuncture has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which can be beneficial for women with PCOS who often experience chronic low-grade inflammation. Reducing inflammation can help improve overall reproductive health and hormone balance.

PCOS, sounds familiar right? You’ve probably heard the term before but let’s dive into what it actually means. Short for polycystic o***y syndrome, PCOS messes with your hormones, causing all sorts of symptoms like irregular periods, unwanted hair growth, and even affects your fertility. It also frequently goes undiagnosed so being informed about this condition is important for all women and may help you advocate for your health.

How It Affects Fertility
🤰Hormone imbalance: This can prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each menstrual cycle. Without regular ovulation, it’s harder to get pregnant.
🤰Irregular Periods: Due to the lack of regular ovulation, women often experience irregular menstrual cycles. This makes it difficult to predict when you’re fertile and can complicate the timing of in*******se for conception.
🤰Insulin Resistance: This is a common symptom for PCOS and can lead to higher insulin levels, causing the ovaries to produce more androgens. This vicious cycle can further disrupt ovulation and fertility.
🤰Ovarian Cysts: The ovaries often contain small, fluid-filled sacs called follicles. These follicles contain immature eggs that never mature enough to trigger ovulation. The presence of multiple cysts can interfere with the normal function of the ovaries.
🤰Inflammation: Women with PCOS often have low-grade inflammation, which can stimulate polycystic ovaries to produce androgens. This inflammation can also contribute to heart and blood vessel problems, adding another layer of complexity to fertility issues.
If you have PCOS or are concerned that you might, don’t be alarmed! Together we can work to balance your hormone levels and increase your fertility. Click on the link below to book a free consultation or wait for my next post to see how acupuncture can help.

You know what can be a fantastic tool for helping you recover after giving birth? ✨Acupuncture✨ Here’s why:
✅ Boosts Natural Healing: Acupuncture enhances you body’s natural healing processes by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation in the affected area.
✅ Pain Relief: Regular sessions can really help alleviate the pain and discomfort that come with birth, making your healing faster and more effective.
✅ Emotional Wellbeing: The hormonal roller coaster after birth can be intense. Acupuncture helps balance your hormones, reducing the risk of postpartum depression and improving your overall emotional health.
✅ Regulates Bleeding Through Moxibustion: It’s essential to monitor postpartum bleeding. Acupuncture can help ensure that your bleeding is normal and support your body’s natural healing processes. Using moxa, a warming technique with dried mugwort, we can gently warm the womb and promote healing.
✅ Digestion and Constipation: Many women experience digestive issues or constipation postpartum. Acupuncture promotes healthy digestion and alleviates these discomforts.
✅ Sleep and Night Sweats: Quality sleep is tough to come by with a newborn, but acupuncture can help improve your sleep patterns and manage those pesky night sweats. ✅ Perineum Healing and Hemorrhoids: Acupuncture can aid in the healing of your perineum and reduce hemorrhoids, providing much-needed relief from discomfort.
✅ Swollen Legs: It helps improve circulation and reduce swelling in your legs, which is common after childbirth.

So, if you’re looking for a holistic approach to postpartum recovery, adding acupuncture to your routine is a great option!

30/07/2024

Promoting perineal healing is essential to your postpartum road to recovery and getting you mamas out there back to feeling energized and rejuvenated. At least 53-89% of women experience perineal tearing after giving birth according to the National Institutes of Health and up to 9 out of every 10 new mothers. The solution? A sitz bath.

🛁What is it?🛁
It’s all about soaking your perineum in warm water, starting anywhere from 24 to 48 hours after giving birth and continuing through the postpartum period, about 1-3 times daily. This helps heal any perineal tears. If your perineum is swollen in the first 24 hours, it’s a good idea to apply ice to reduce the swelling. Once the swelling goes down, you can switch to warm water soaks.

💧How to Do It?💧
You can either use a specialized sitz bath basin that fits over your toilet or you can sit in your bathtub field with about 20 cm of water. Note: It’s important not to take a full bath as your cervix remains open for approximately 4 weeks after childbirth. There’s a risk of infection if germs from the bathwater enter your uterus.

❤️‍🩹How Does it Help?❤️‍🩹
The warmth on your perineum boosts blood flow and oxygen to the tissue, speeding up the healing process.

🌿Giving Your Bath a Boost🌿
You can amplify the healing effects by adding Epsom salt and certain herbs to the baths. These herbs include arnica flowers, calendula flowers, comfrey leaf, chamomile flowers, ground ginger root, and eucalyptus leaf to name a few. Whether used individually or in combination in a sitz bath, these herbs reduce swelling, pain, and the risk of infection in the perineal area after childbirth. They can even be found pre-mixed in handy tea bags that you just drop into your bath.

Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of breastfeeding, you may be wondering: so what if I’m encountering problems while breastfeeding or am worried about issues occurring? If you struggle or are nervous about this, you’re not alone. According to the CDC, over 80% of mothers have difficulty while breastfeeding. While acupuncture may not be your first thought when it comes to solving breastfeeding issues, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! It’s been incredibly effective in my experience.

I’ve faced my own breastfeeding challenge including low milk supply and mastitis (yes it can happen even to midwives). Sometimes, things don’t go as planned and that’s when the right support can make all the difference. I’m here to help you navigate these bumps in the road and give you the confidence you need!🫶
Here are some common issues that acupuncture can help with:
🍼Engorgement relief: Acupuncture targets specific points to help reduce breast swelling and pain, making breastfeeding more comfortable.
🍼Increased milk supply: By balancing hormones, acupuncture can help ensure a steady and sufficient milk production.
🍼Mastitis Treatment: It can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting healing without the need for antibiotics.
🍼Stress and fatigue reduction: Acupuncture is incredibly relaxing and can help manage the stress and fatigue that come with having a new baby. As you might know, letdown is triggered by oxytocin. If you’re feeling tired, in pain, or doubting your abilities as a new mom, stress can inhibit oxytocin production, potentially lowering your milk supply. Acupuncture can help you relax, boosting your confidence and well-being which in turn supports a healthy milk supply.

If you’re facing any of these challenges, acupuncture is a great option to consider! Along with acupuncture, I can share all my tips as an experienced midwife, lactation consultant, doula, and mom of two who breastfed each of my kids for a year. If you’d like to book an appointment, feel free to text me at 628-236-7100.

What makes breast milk so special? It’s a dynamic, living substance, uniquely adapting to the evolving needs of the baby (aka the ultimate superfood) The milk composition changes based on the baby’s gestational age, weight, and overall health. There may even be changes during a single feeding or from day to day! If the baby is sick, the composition is altered to help fight the infection. But that’s not all:
Benefits to Your Baby
🍼Better cognitive development and better secure attachment
🍼Better psycho motive development
🍼Reduces risk of sudden infant death syndrome
🍼Better jaw development: reduces risk of dental malocclusion
🍼Reduces risk of infection
🍼Reduces risk of obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, vascular diseases like high blood pressure and hypercholesterol, and cancer
🍼Reduces the risk of skin conditions
🍼Reduces digestive issues

Benefits to You
👩‍🍼Reduces postpartum bleeding, prevents hemorrhage
👩‍🍼Faster uterine involution
👩‍🍼Helps getting back to your pre-pregnancy weight
👩‍🍼Increases time in between 2 pregnancies
👩‍🍼Reduces gynecological cancers
👩‍🍼Reduces the risk of osteoporosis after menopause

Of course breastfeeding is a journey and can have its fair share of hiccups along the way. This is why it’s important to create the right environment. Successful breastfeeding thrives in an atmosphere of tranquility, confidence, and relaxation, which are vital for the secretion of hormones necessary for milk production. Here, the partner’s role in nurturing a supportive environment is crucial. They can bolster the mother’s spirits, ensure she is well-nourished and stress-free, and participate in making informed decisions collectively for the baby’s health. This collaborative approach not only facilitates effective breastfeeding but also fosters a harmonious family dynamic.

🍽️ Looking for healthy meals that are also gestational diabetes-friendly? Well look no further. Whether you have gestational diabetes or are looking to prevent it during pregnancy, read the following for tips on how to create balanced meals and recipes.

When managing gestational diabetes, visualizing your plate can be a helpful way to ensure balanced meals. Imagine your plate divided into 3 sections:
🥕 Non-starchy vegetables: This should fill half of your plate and includes options such as leafy greens, broccoli, bell peppers, carrots, and cauliflower. These vegetables are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals which help keep your blood sugar levels stable.
🥩 Lean proteins: This should fill a quarter of your plate and includes sources like chicken, fish, tofu, eggs, and beans. Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass and helps slow the absorption of carbohydrates, preventing spikes in blood sugar.
🫘 Whole grains/starchy vegetables: This should fill the remaining quarter of your plate. It’s best to opt for complex carbohydrates like brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, or legumes. These provide a steady release of energy and are less likely to cause rapid increases in blood sugar levels compared to refined carbohydrates.

Still needing some meal inspiration? 💭 I know this is easier said than done so I’ve included some recipes on the following slides to help get you started. Swipe to take a look!

How Can I Treat Gestational Diabetes?
Below are my dietary recommendations for you mamas out there with gestational diabetes:
🍽️ Space out your eating: Eating too much at one time can cause your blood sugar to spike but not eating enough can cause sudden drops, neither of which are good for you or the baby. To prevent this, I recommend having 3 meals and 2-3 snacks each day.
🍞 Eat reasonable amounts of starch: I recommend 1 cup of starch per meal (this is about 2 pieces of bread). Because starch turns into glucose, it’s important not to have too much of these foods. However, it is still necessary and should be incorporated into every meal.
🍳 Don’t skip breakfast: Blood sugar can be difficult to control in the morning due to normal fluctuations in hormone levels. To counteract this, I recommend having a starch with protein for breakfast.
🍰 Be mindful of sugar: Fruit is healthy but is high in natural sugars. You may have 1-3 portions per day, but only eat one at a time. Fruit juice, however, is a very concentrated source of carbohydrates, like sugar, and is best to avoid. Sweets and desserts should be more strictly limited since they contain high amounts of carbohydrates with little nutritional value. And added sugars should be avoided altogether if possible.
🥛 Regulate milk intake: Milk is important as it is a good source of calcium but also is a liquid form of carbohydrates. This means that it’s best to only drink one cup a time in order to avoid blood sugar spikes.
