🎤 Lives in Code: Stories of African American Resilience
At 2 PM on Saturday, don’t miss the free presentation by Caroline Kisiel, “Lives in Code: Stories of African American Resilience Under the Illinois Black Codes, 1819-1865.” In this powerful session, Caroline will reveal the untold stories of African Americans who lived under the restrictive Black Codes in Illinois. These codes imposed harsh laws that denied basic freedoms to free Blacks and enslaved people, but despite these oppressive restrictions, many African Americans in 19th-century Illinois built lives, formed communities, and helped runaway slaves—often at great personal risk.
Learn how they navigated the challenges of these laws and fought for their right to live freely. This eye-opening presentation, co-presented by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, offers a deeper understanding of Illinois’ complex and often overlooked history of slavery, racial segregation, and resilience.
