Families are often shocked to hear that they do not need to increase the amount per feeding as their babies grow like they would with formula. Since breastmilk adapts to what your baby needs based on biofeedback and age postpartum most breastfed babies max out at about 3-5oz per feeding. Do you need help figuring out appropriate volumes to bottle feed your baby? Book a consult! Also join us tomorrow for our breastfeeding support group for Black families at 1030 est. The link is in my bio!

Is my baby getting enough? It’s probably one of the most consistent questions I hear as an IBCLC working in the hospital. Here are a few things I tell my patients to look for in those early weeks that gives us a clue into how much baby is getting:

Diapers - Is baby having enough output? This looks like one p*e and one p**p per day of life up until day 5. At that time we want to see at least 5-6 wet diapers and 3-4 stools daily. Stools should also begin to transition from meconium to yellow and seedy by day 5.

Listen - Are you able to hear swallows? This may be hard to hear in the first few days when colostrum is thick and there isn’t as much volume but take the time to listen. Swallows can sound like small gulps or little puffs of air.

Behavior - Is baby content between feedings? Babies should be able to settle in between feedings and be content for some period of time. If your little one is waking frequently, clusterfeeding around the clock, and inconsolable that would be a signal to get some extra help with feeding.

Feel - What do feedings feel like? Are you feeling strong, consistent tugs or little flutter sucks? Does your breast feel softer at the end of a feeding than they did at the beginning?

Are you still unsure or have more questions? Click the link in my bio to book a consult!

On this last day of we are coming to the end of an era! I’m starting the weaning process (I think 😂) and the first to go is pumping. I’ve been lugging my pump bag and accoutrements for almost a year and the time is here. This is part of my story! I’ve been pregnant or breastfeeding for 8 years and baby the time has come (maybe 🫣). Sometimes endings can be bittersweet and it’s extremely common to experience varying emotions in addition to effects on your hormones when weaning. Where are you in your journey this season? Join me Wednesday 1030 est for our breastfeeding support group to discuss. Link in bio! 💕

It’s officially Black Breastfeeding Week! This year’s theme is Reclaiming Our Narrative and Centering Stories for Breastfeeding Justice. This means a lot to me. As a mother who was the first person I saw breastfeed in my family. As a nurse who watched families work really hard in the NICU to provide breastmilk to their medically fragile infants. As a friend and a sister who encouraged my loved ones to keep going one text, FaceTime, and voice note at a time. As an IBCLC who held space for all the varying emotions mothers experienced in the early postpartum phase while welcoming me into their homes. Now as an IBCLC serving families in the hospital who have limited knowledge and limited time to get hands on care. The stories we tell, as well as the narrative we create, is something so important to how we feed our babies for generations to come. I would love to hear more about your breastfeeding story in the comments! As always I’m here to meet you where you are and help you feed your baby. Link in bio to book a consult 💕
