May Friendship Day (traditionally the first Friday of May) dates back to May 1933, when two independent groups planned luncheons to focus on “Child Health” and “Children of Migrant Families.” The first event was sponsored by the Women’s Council for Home Missions in New York City and the second one, called “Dedication Day,” was sponsored by the National Council of Federated Church Women in order to bring the group’s dream of unity into full expression in each local community. Under a variety of names, this event continued and expanded until 1939, when they merged under the National Council of Church Women, which called for an annual observance “to strengthen a growing sense of unity, the joy of Christian fellowship, and the power of Christianity in the day of need.” In May 1945, a few years after the founding of Church Women United, the celebration was formalized as May Fellowship Day. In 1999, the movement of Church Women United changed the name of the celebration to May Friendship Day, as we continue to celebrate unity in our journey toward wholeness in all communities.

There are several days and countless reasons to celebrate friendship. Two of our dearest Oasis Assisted Living residents show that the joy of friendship never grows old!

Safety Tips:

Stay Cool
1. Limit your outdoor activity to when it’s coolest, like morning and evening hours
2. Find your nearest cooling center for free access to air conditioning and water
3. Do not leave children or pets alone in a parked car. The temperature inside can rise quickly and become deadly

Stay Hydrated
1. Drink plenty of water throughout the day
2. Avoid alcohol and drinks with high caffeine or sugar
3. Check the guidelines for adequate hydration when doing moderate activities in the heat

Stay Informed
1. Look out for signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses
2. Check the weather forecast for temperature, humidity, and UV index
3. Learn more about NWS today's heat risk map
4. Check in regularly with friends, family, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat exhaustion or heat stroke

Be SunWise
1. Limit sun exposure with sunglasses, hats, and lightweight clothing
2. Use SPF 30+ sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays

DID YOU KNOW?
Hot weather can cause you to lose important salt and minerals through heavy sweating?
You need those in your body to function properly. However, it is crucial that you do not take salt tablets unless directed by your doctor. The best way to replace them is by eating foods that contain them. Instead of just water, try drinking some fruit juice or sports drinks while you exercise or work in the heat.
