I’ve been trying to hit the trails once a week because for me, walks in nature equal self-care. What’s your favorite way to take care of yourself during tough or stressful times?

Over the past year, I have enjoyed making “inspiration stones” as a final session activity. Clients choose a few of their core values from lists we’ve created during our work together. For these stones, we used paint markers, including some fun metallic shades.

I loved this piece from psychologist Amber Groomes (whom I supervised many years ago at the Austin Child Guidance Center).

If you are a woman feeling anxious and angry in the aftermath of the election, you are not alone. In the days since November 4th, women have reported feeling anxiety, anger, sadness, and even hopelessness. Instead of engaging in actions based on fear, we can practice choosing behaviors that support....

To clarify: This is MY collage. My client created their own.

A very wise therapist friend recently reminded me that it’s ok to go slow and meet clients where they’re at. This is the collage I created during a session with a very quiet and reticent teen client—who talked more today than in any other session ❤️

I am moving to a new office in January 2025. I'll be at 1500 W. 38th St, Suite 31. I am looking forward to getting my new office set up with spaces for both assessment and therapy. Speaking of assessment, I have openings starting on January 7. If you are looking for an assessment for your child or teen--or want to refer one of your therapy clients--I'd love to help out!

As a therapist who uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I often talk to my clients about emotions as “messengers” or ask, “What is this feeling telling you?” Viewing emotions as messengers can make it easier for us to accept them—instead of struggling with them. When you stop struggling against tough emotions, you may find it easier to pursue what really matters to you! If you want to learn more about ACT, this video is a great introduction: https://youtu.be/3TTv6Faep54?si=GQxXNNADgRk8XYdW

Here are some great recommendations for dealing with parenting stress. I particularly love the suggestions about reframing, self-compassion, and “micro-breaks.” ❤️

Parenting, while rewarding, brings significant challenges and stress, often leading to burnout. This article explores parental burnout, its impact, and offers practical advice from psychologists on managing stress and finding support.

I work with a lot of kids and teens who’ve experienced panic attacks, and one of their biggest fears is often related to others witnessing their panic. I love how this story normalizes and destigmatizes the experience of having a panic attack.

Australian meteorologist Nate Byrne had a panic attack while live on air. See how his candid approach and support from co-hosts helped him manage the moment.

My clients and I often talk about emotions as messengers--as something we can be curious about--rather than something to be afraid of. I love when I find an article or podcast to reinforce this idea. The Happiness Lab is an all-around great podcast, and the host (Dr. Laurie Santos) did a series in 2022 about resetting our relationship with negative emotions. I recommend the whole series, but I particularly liked "Emotions are Data . . . So Listen to Them." Give it a listen and tell me what you think!

I don’t know that I’ve ever recommended a book here, but this is a good one! The authors present a neurodiversity-affirming look at more subtle presentations of autism. They review the research, but more importantly, also include an autistic “board of experts” in each chapter. This book is great for parents, partners, professionals, and anyone else who wants to better understand someone with autism. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love this graphic and what it shows us about how anxiety works. It’s common to feel anxious about being anxious, and then begin to feel a wave of emotions such as anger, sadness, guilt, and more because of our initial feelings of anxiety. Therapy isn’t about making anxiety disappear; rather it’s about changing the way you relate to your anxiety!
