Today I learned...

The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of West and Central Africans who were enslaved on the rice, cotton, and indigo plantations of the coastal areas and Sea Islands from North Carolina to Florida. Isolated by the geography of their environment, they developed a unique and vibrant Creole culture, language, and traditions that remain remarkably preserved today.

While Black History Month (February) and Juneteenth (June) are widely known, the Gullah Geechee Nation and its cultural advocates use October to dedicate an entire month to increasing global recognition and awareness of their specific living heritage.

This month is a dedicated time to celebrate their:

• Distinct Language (known as Gullah or Geechee)
• Unique Arts and Crafts (like the famous sweetgrass baskets)
• Rich Foodways (red rice, seafood gumbo, and other Lowcountry staples)
• Enduring Spirituality and Resilience

It's a call to action to support the preservation of their land, culture, and history in the federally recognized Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Learning about this culture is learning an essential part of American history.

Mutual aid post boost!

Update: It took a little bit of wrangling and a couple of escape attempts, but we finally have Serah and her cats safely away from her abuser. We are staying one more day in Texas to prepare for the journey home, and then we are starting the long drive tomorrow
