This comes up quite often with both clients and in casual conversation. Cardio has been elevated to some level of mystical importance in the ‘eat less, move more’ weight loss strategy that typically fails you after you lose that first 20 pounds and then see it come crashing back and then some… I’m not saying cardio is bad, it’s just often used improperly. For weight loss, your goal is to be in a calorie deficit. As such, you need to eat fewer calories than your body needs for both regular day-to-day activity and any purposeful workout that you do.

Cardio can be that purposeful workout activity if you like, however there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, cardio doesn’t just burn fat. You lose both fat and muscle over time from cardio. Most people are good with losing fat, but kind of want to keep what muscle they have if not improve that in some way. Second, your body can metabolically adapt to the cardio over time. This is troubling because your body not only becomes more efficient when you are doing your chosen form of cardio, but it also slows metabolic function when you are not working out. Now you have to eat even less food to maintain that caloric deficit you were after in the first place.

This outlines why ‘eat less, move more’ is a race to the bottom. Luckily, there is a better way. Instead of running from your problems (see what I did there), focus on making changes in a different order.

Your first priority - by an absolute landslide - should be to correct the way you eat. Notice I didn’t say diet. You can lose weight eating significantly more calories than what most people think they need. This can be seen as a sustainable lifestyle change instead of a diet that is typically associated with major restrictions. The focus should be on eating a calorically balanced diet with macro-nutrients fit to your unique needs that includes mostly minimally processed food.

If you feel the need to workout while trying to lose weight, the most effective thing you can do is….lift weights. Where cardio causes both fat and muscle loss over time, weight training can bolster muscle causing both men and women to tone up in the areas you likely want to look better. Increased muscle leads to more metabolic need so you won’t have to reduce your calories as much as you lose weight.

If any of this is confusing, I’m happy to explain in more detail. I offer a free initial consultation and we can talk about the challenges you’ve had making changes to your body. I want to help you achieve your goals while decoding the fitness myths and mis-information so you can better understand how to take control of your health and wellness. There is a program that can work for you - even if you don’t like cardio! Message me today to get started.

Yesterday marked the 1000th day of my personal wellness journey. During that time I've been able to lose over 140 pounds, but what I gained in that time surpasses what I lost in body mass. I found discipline I didn't know I had, fell in love with the process learning not to solely focus on the end results, improved my relationship with food without having to give up letting eating be fun, improved my relationship with my family and I found purpose in helping others on their wellness journeys. It wasn't an easy process but with a little focus it doesn't have to be hard either.

I thought I would share some of my biggest take aways thus far:

1) Personal wellness is essential. Everyone has a crazy load of priorities facing them every day. You'll be better at facing all those challenges if you are taking care of yourself first and foremost. On an airplane during pre-flight instructions they indicate if airbags drop, secure your own before helping others. Your personal health is no different.

2) Motivation is great but it's not linear. You have to take what motivation you can muster and convert it to consistency and discipline. Those are lasting qualities that can drive you for the long haul.

3) Learn to love yourself. I'm not talking about sappy blind love but we learn to love and accept those around us for who they are and don't pressure them to meet some crazy standards. Why then do we do that to ourselves. Love who you are today and if you want to make changes, do so from a place of personal love and respect and not from a position of hatred. It's hard to try and change for others, instead focus on pleasing yourself.

That said you don't trek this far alone. Surround yourself with a team of people that you can trust to be supportive. Getting the right help is invaluable and inviting the wrong people to be part of your personal growth can cause major damage. There are some people I'm forever grateful for having in my life and helping shape my success. This isn't a complete list but here it goes...My wife, Christy Wolfe - there's no one I'd rather share life with and sharing this journey with you has been so special to me. Alice Jean Lange and Massage and Skin Care SolutionsMassage and Skin Care - I continually beat up my body and she helps put humpty dumpty back together again and again. You've been wonderful and supportive throughout. Amped Fitness and Erica Shaben - my journey started when I wandered through the doors at Amped. It was like a home away from home to me for so much of this process. While I only trained with Erica for a short time, she restore my faith in having a personal trainer - I learned so much that I incorporate to this day. I'll be forever grateful to her and my Amped family - miss you guys so much! Jules Delamar - It's true you can't outwork a bad diet and it's equally true that personal wellness involves both body and mind. They are vastly more related than I ever understood. Mental health MOST DEFINITELY matters. If you have an EAP program at work and are struggling with your mental health call them!!! Changed. My. Life. I was so fortunate to find Jules - she helped me unlock a better me. Just had to lift a different kind of weight than I'm used to. Precision Nutrition - Who helped me make this about more than myself. Learning how to share the gift I have been given has lasting meaning to me. I can't help everyone but I can help some people find their best self. Paraphrasing Loki it gives me Glorious Purpose. My Wolfe Wellness Coaching clients - when I started to figure everything out I was mad that the truth about nutrition and fitness is hidden under piles of absolute garbage messaging and products. I wish I knew what I know now 20 years ago. Since we haven't solved time travel yet, I decided instead to focus on helping others gain the knowledge I've been fortunate enough to receive. I learn and grow with my clients every day. They constantly make me better. I love hearing the insanely improved results of their most recent blood work at their doctor who scratches their head at the change. I love when they tell me about how others are noticing their progress and watching them gain confidence in themselves that stretches past just weight loss. I can't wait to see how things grow in year two of the business.
Fitness influencers on the right side of the ledger - Mike Matthews, who helped me get 'Bigger Leaner Stronger'. The Flexible Dieting Lifestyle and Zach who makes eating right taste ohhh so good. Fouad Abiad and HOSSTILE NATION who for me has such a straight approach to how food improves performance and, while I'll always be a natural lifter, I share a brain with that dude in how we approach food for performance.

If you made it this far thanks for reading and I'll leave you with the cliche before and current (not after) pictures.

I'm currently cutting (looking to lose 1lb per week) after a 6-month reverse diet and maintenance cycle. I've trained my metabolism to handle a good amount of food and I can still lose weight. My target is around 2800 calories per day (give or take 100 calories). I'm a natural weight lifter, 6'2" 255lbs and just under 20% body fat.

One rule I have for myself is that food should be fun and taste good. This day was no exception and got me to my to goals. Here's a look at everything I ate and final macros.

Pre-Workout Breakfast: Egg Whites, One Whole Egg, Giardiniera, Avocado and Fat-Free Cheddar Cheese

Post-Workout Breakfast: Kodiak cakes w/Fairlife Skim Milk, Applesauce, Kraft Carmel Nibs and Sugar Free Syrup

Post-Workout Recovery: Alpha Lion Leg Day Limeade (Essential Amino Acid), Creatine and Water

First Lunch: Cod, Jasmine Rice and Broccoli

Second Lunch: Homemade Chicken Chipotle Bowl (that's 0% plain greek yogurt and not sour cream on there)

Dinner: 93/7 Lean Ground Beef, Old El Paso Bold Taco Shells, Mission Tortilla and Cheese

Not Pictured (After Dinner Protein Shake - 9pm): Kaged Muscle Chocolate Shake Casein Protein in Water

Total Macros for the day: 2880 Calories, 275g Protein, 83g Fat, 227g Carbohydrates.

Do you need help planning your day of eating to meet your goals (lose weight, gain weight, add muscle, improve athleticism, etc.)? Please message me to take advantage of my free initial consultation. I don't tell my clients what to eat. Instead, we work together to determine what your schedule looks like, what food you have available and like to eat. I help empower you to build your own plan and achieve your goals. This results in manageable lifestyle changes that will give you better control over your personal health and wellness.
