Our second-year students explored the world of manual and power wheelchairs, dove into cushion seating systems, and practiced wheelie techniques for curb navigation - essential skills for empowering clients with mobility needs.

Students also gained critical insight into documenting medical necessity, which is essential for advocating for appropriate and accessible equipment.

In their Foundations of Occupational Therapy course, first-year OTD students practiced activity analysis skills while playing outdoor games. It was hot, but popsicles helped cool them down! Thank you, COTAD, for providing the popsicles😊

OT in Action!

Our Occupational Therapy students are diving deep into Assistive Technology with a hands-on lab focused on pelvic positioning and obliquities.

Students practiced assessing posture and alignment to ensure optimal support and function, while also learning how to measure clients for customized wheelchair fittings. They explored how assistive technology can enhance mobility, comfort, and independence in wheelchair users.

Real-world skills. Real impact.

Our OTD students had an incredible hands-on learning experience at Superior Van and Mobility —the nation’s largest family-owned mobility dealer! During their Assistive Technology course with Dr. Ruediger, students explored a wide range of adaptive equipment, including wheelchair-accessible vans, lifts, scooter carriers, and customized driving solutions. This real-world visit deepened their understanding of mobility access and client-centered care, empowering them to better serve individuals with diverse needs.

The second-year OTD students are diving into the Social Determinants of Health this summer, and we were honored to welcome our first guest lecturer, Rusty from Superior Van and Mobility . Rusty shared a wealth of knowledge and personal insight about his recovery journey and the critical role that accessible transportation plays in promoting independence and community participation.

The LMU Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) Program would like to take a moment to honor and remember Paul Erway, a friend to our program and an inspiration to so many. Paul was an inspiring storyteller. Our students loved his dramatic presentation each year. Through sharing his journey, Paul helped shape the hearts and minds of so many of our students, preparing them to become more compassionate, understanding, and driven therapists.

We are incredibly saddened to hear of his passing. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence lives on in the many lives he touched here at LMU and beyond. Thank you, Paul, for everything.

April was OT month! So much fun was had this month, from lunches to donuts, classes to events, conferences to presentations, and saying goodbye to the Class of 2025. We wish them success as they transition into the field of OT!

We are thrilled to share that Ashley Zimmerman, a member of the Class of 2025, will be running the Boston Marathon on April 21st. She is excited for this opportunity and had this to say:

Growing up, I have always been a multi-sport athlete, competing in soccer and track and field at Murray State University. After college, I wanted to continue being physically active and began my training journey for half and full marathons in 2022. In November 2023, I ran my second marathon and earned a qualifying time, making me eligible for the 2025 Boston Marathon. Running has taught me many valuable life lessons, supported my physical and emotional well-being, and helped me find a community of like-minded people in Knoxville who share the same passion. Running has also been an excellent outlet for me while in OT school, especially when I'm feeling stressed or need a mental break. Finally, skills such as discipline, organization, and time management that I acquired through running have also carried over into my success as an OT student.

We are excited to announce that Carey Newman, a student from the Class of 2025, has been accepted into the Brooks Higher Learning's Neurologic OT Fellowship program. This opportunity allows for Carey to deepen her expertise in neurological rehabilitation while refining her clinical reasoning and hands-on skills. She will rotate through various specialized areas, including spinal cord injury (SCI), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), brain injury (BI), and the outpatient Neuro Recovery Center. In addition to clinical training, she will also have the opportunity to assist at local universities and mentor OT students, combining her passion for education and advocacy with real-world experience.
