Thinking about accepting insurance at your psychiatry practice? It can seem overwhelming, but with the right roadmap, it's absolutely manageable.

Most practices expect a 2-month timeline. Smart practices plan for 4-6 months.

You're working with payer approval processes and committee meetings on schedules you can't control. When you understand the dependency chain—contract approval, then credentialing, then EDI enrollment—you can plan accordingly.

If you're offering TMS or Spravato, there are additional steps, but they're predictable once you know what to expect.

Just like in medicine, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
The key is having a clear timeline, proper documentation, and the right billing partner who understands psychiatry's unique requirements.

Our complete guide walks you through each step so you can expand your practice with confidence:

Start taking insurance with confidence. Learn the essential timeline, documentation, and partner selection strategies that set successful psychiatry practices up for insurance success.

The FDA has invited our Chief Medical Officer, William Sauvé, MD, to present at this Friday's Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee. The Committee will review the supplemental new drug application submitted by Otsuka for brexpiprazole tablets, in combination with sertraline, as a potential treatment for adults with PTSD.

The FDA convenes advisory committees for critical public health matters—PTSD affects 5-6% of Americans annually, with higher rates among veterans.
Dr. Sauve's expertise spans military psychiatry, inpatient PTSD programs, and clinical innovation at Osmind.

He will address treatment gaps and advocate for higher standards of care, bringing decades of frontline experience to regulatory discussions that shape treatment advancement.

The meeting streams live and archives for later viewing—essential viewing for anyone developing PTSD treatments or seeking better patient outcomes.

Here's what you're missing this month in the Osmind Psychiatry Collective:

•Psychedelics for treating substance abuse: Brittany Albright MD, MPH shared research on psychedelics showing 66% of participants reduced alcohol consumption and 49% decreased to***co use after psychedelic experiences. The study also found 48-72% reported better impulse control. "This study opens the door to future research examining psychedelics and their effects on wellness, not simply psychopathology," she noted.

•Metabolic Psychiatry: Bret Scher, MD, sparked discussion by sharing Christopher Palmer, MD's perspective: "Mental health disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain." Members dove into the strong connections between metabolic and mental health, with clinicians sharing success stories from implementing ketogenic therapy as adjuvant treatment.

•The age of AI: William Sauvé, MD sparked a discussion on AI vs. physician diagnostics. Some members expressed concerns about AI replacing human empathy in therapy, while others questioned whether we're training doctors to win at computer games rather than practice actual medicine. The conversation touched on everything from neuropsychological testing to whether patients actually prefer AI therapists.

80 new members joined just in the last month, sharing real-world insights you don't find in journals alone.

Join the discussion, including weekly live virtual events.

"When patients tell me they feel 100% for the first time in years—restored, clear-headed and free of medication side effects" — Dr. Martha B. Koo, M.D., LFAPA, FASAM, FCTMSS joins Osmind as Medical Advisor, bringing expertise as a founding member of the Clinical TMS Society, and founder of Your Behavioral Health's 30+ locations across Southern California.

Her three-part vision for transforming mental healthcare:

•Move beyond "good enough" psychiatry: "Other medical specialties would never accept this standard. In psychiatry, we routinely start with medications that only have a 30% remission rate when treatments like TMS can achieve so much more."

•Prioritize prevention and precision: "Instead of waiting for symptoms, a diagnosis and then treatment, we need to prioritize prevention. I envision a world where we have identified the biomarkers predicting future illness, and we possess the technology to know the most effective treatment for every individual."

•Build infrastructure for breakthrough treatments: "We need systems that make it easier for clinicians to deliver evidence-based care and we need researchers to understand what's actually working in real-world clinical settings."

Your practice may be hemorrhaging money, and you probably don't even realize it.Prior authorization hits psychiatry harder than almost any other specialty—57% of our services compared to 30% elsewhere.

If you offer Spravato or TMS, your headache multiplies. Here's the reality you'll find in our latest blog:

•Why 78-82% of psychiatric patients abandon treatment due to PA barriers

•The hidden costs of Spravato/TMS authorization delays ($49K+ annually per patient)

•Why hiring a PA specialist typically backfires and costs even more

But change might actually be coming.

Yesterday, HHS Secretary Kennedy and CMS Administrator Dr. Oz got major insurers—Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and others—to pledge fixes to the broken prior auth system by 2026-2027.

Their promises sound good on paper. We've heard promises before.

Smart practices aren't waiting around to find out.

The ones getting prior auths right already have solutions and systems in place that positively impact their bottom line and patient care.

We broke down exactly what they're doing differently:

Psychiatric practices face prior authorization requirements at nearly double the rate of other medical specialties, creating hidden costs that most practice owners don't see until it's too late. From delays for standard medications to waits for Spravato and TMS treatments, discover the true financia...

🎯 60 million patients. 70,000 clinicians (an intentionally optimistic number). Even at maximum capacity, the math doesn't work

Here's the uncomfortable truth: If every psychiatrist and APP in America saw 4 patients per hour, every hour, every day, we'd still fall short of meeting mental health demand.

But give me a big enough lever, and I can move mental healthcare mountains.

During William Sauvé, MD deployment in Iraq's Al Anbar province, he learned about "force multipliers"— strategic tools that exponentially increase impact without adding resources.

One Navy Corpsman with psychiatric training could do 95% of what he could do, effectively doubling the unit's mental health capacity.

The same principle applies to psychiatric practice:

✅ Smart triage systems that match patients to the right resources faster

✅ Strategic use of TMS and esketamine to free up med management slots

✅ Collaborative networks where practices share expertise, not compete for patients

✅ Tech that scales care beyond the 15-minute med check

The shortage isn't going away. But psychiatrists who understand force multipliers can serve more patients, achieve better outcomes, and avoid burnout.

Read the full breakdown: https://www.osmind.org/blog/force-multipliers

What force multipliers are you already using in your practice?

Sixty million Americans need mental health treatment. Seventy thousand psychiatrists and APPs exist to serve them. Even if every clinician worked at maximum capacity—four patients per hour, every hour, every day—we'd still fall short. The math doesn't work. This article explores “force multipl...
