Supporting Joint Health & Hydration as We Age — Through the Wisdom of Chinese Medicine

As we get older, joint stiffness, dryness, and discomfort can become more common. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers gentle, time-tested strategies to keep the body moving fluidly and pain-free.

Here are a few ways to support joint vitality, especially for those 60+:

💧 Hydration is foundational
Warm water with fresh lemon throughout the day helps nourish connective tissue and flush metabolic waste.

🌿 Use food as medicine
Ginger, in teas or cooked meals, improves circulation and helps ease inflammation—naturally warming the body from the inside out.

🥣 Electrolytes matter
A simple recipe: warm water + lemon juice + a pinch of sea salt + a bit of honey. This supports hydration and post-activity recovery.

🧘‍♂️ Movement is medicine
Gentle, low-impact practices like tai chi, qigong, or mindful walking help circulate fluids and keep joints mobile.

🌙 Daily rhythm matters
When hydration, nourishment, and movement are consistent, joint resilience improves—and so does energy, sleep, and mood.

🔥 Warm the Womb to Boost Fertility 🔥
Trying to conceive? Skip the smoothies, raw salads, and iced drinks—for now.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cold = contraction. And we want flow, warmth, and nourishment to support your womb like the softest, coziest blanket. ✨

🍲 Eat warm, cooked foods (think soups, stews, roasted veggies)
🍵 Sip herbal teas instead of iced anything
🧦 Keep your feet and belly warm—no bare ankles in winter!
🌿 Embrace warming rituals: moxa, hot water bottles, gentle movement

A warm womb is a receptive womb.
Let your body feel safe, held, and ready.

🌱 Spring Into Balance: Eat with the Season! 🌱
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is the time of the Liver — a season of growth, expansion, and new beginnings. To align with nature’s rhythm, lighten your meals and nourish your body with fresh, upward-growing foods.

✨ Think:
– Young leafy greens like dandelion, arugula, and spinach
– Sour flavors like lemon and vinegar to gently cleanse
– Lightly cooked meals to support Liver Qi flow
– Avoid heavy, greasy, or overly spicy foods that burden the system

Eating seasonally isn’t just trendy — it’s ancient wisdom that helps us feel more vibrant, clear-headed, and in sync with the world around us.

Marny Culpepper's 9 Point Body Assessment is a great way to check in and listen, which can help you make better choices in what you need in the moment.

FIRST | BREATH 🌬
Everyone avoids meditation. It's hard. It's boring. But here's the deal, we've all forgotten how to breathe. Even if you don't meditate, you can participate in deep, lung capacity breaths throughout the day. The most important aspect of a deep, lung capacity breath is to feel the breath stretch your ribs, and permeate areas of your back and belly you typically don't pay attention to. Try it right now! No instructions needed.

SECOND | ARE YOU A WATER BALLOON?
🎈Hydration and fluid balance include electrolytes, kidney function, lymph movement, and water intake. Don't ignore this basic balance point if you're feeling stuck and yuck. Sauna, drinking 1/2 your body weight in oz of water daily, foam rolling, movement, sweaty exercise, cupping, and dry brushing are ways to move lymph, and enhance the body's natural detoxification capacity.

THIRD | IS MY BRAIN ON FIRE OR JUST FRAZZLED 😣
Nervous System and Allopathic Stress Load. This includes HRV heart rate variability, vagal tone, stress resilience, and anxiety levels. For nervous system support, think about meditation, somatics, dance, gardening, forest baths, and grounding.

FOURTH | GUT TRAFFIC CONGESTION 🚗 Is it flowing or gridlocked? This includes digestion, absorption, microbiome balance, motility. You must have a formed bowel movement daily for optimal bowel health. No exceptions. We're here to help you accomplish that.

FIFTH | BATTERY CHECK 💯
Am I at 2% or 85%? This includes metabolic function, mitochondria health, blood sugar, energy production, and thyroid health. Most of us are running on empty without realizing it. Humans need recovery time to function optimally. Acupuncture is a great way to give your body a battery check.

SIXTH | THE OIL CHECK 🤓
How well am I detoxing? This includes liver function, heavy metals, mold, and toxin elimination. A spring detoxification program like what is offered at Tao to Wellness, hint hint, is a great way to support the liver, kidneys, and other detoxification organs.

SEVENTH | INFLAMMATION 😡
Includes autoimmunity, chronic infections, systemic inflammation. This category is the root to virtually every chronic, modern disease. You're setting up a life-insurance policy when you prioritize your health and wellness by reducing inflammation with food, lifestyle, acupuncture, herbs, and movement.

EIGHTH | STRUCTURAL TUNE UP 😎
Are your emotions dark and stormy or are there clear skies? Includes mental health issues, trauma response, neuroplasticity, and emotional resilience. This is one of my favorite topics to talk about with patients at Tao to Wellness and we go into deep discussions about mental health, underlying issues affecting mental health, the second brain, and more.

NINTH | THE MOOD FORECAST ⛈
Are your emotions dark and stormy or are there clear skies? Includes mental health issues, trauma response, neuroplasticity, and emotional resilience. This is one of my favorite topics to talk about with patients at Tao to Wellness and we go into deep discussions about mental health, underlying issues affecting mental health, the second brain, and more.
