It was an honor to be a part of the Faculty teaching at the Depuy Advanced Anterior Hip Course in Long Beach, CA the other week. When I first decided to start practicing on Maui, I was worried my career acheivements might be limited. Being selected to teach amongst my peers on the mainland is a major milestone and a testament to what our operative teams here on Maui have achieved. Going from performing the first anterior hip ever done on Maui, to teaching the advanced course 🙌🙏👍

Dr. Thielen is the only surgeon on Maui performing minimally invasive anterior total hip arthroplasty at Aloha Surgery Center.
The anterior approach utilizes an anatomical inter muscular plane between the Sartorius and Tensor muscles. There is no cutting of muscle or tendon which results in a quicker recovery. The anterior approach also creates a more stable hip postoperative than other approaches allowing our patients to get back to surfing, yoga, and any of their activities without restrictions.
The implant shown has pores in the metal that the bone grows into for the long term stability. The bearing surface is ceramic against highly wear resistant plastic.

Dr. Thielen graduated with a civil engineering degree, but decided to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery because of his time volunteering at Shriners Hospital on Oahu. At Shiners, he fell in love with the idea of getting to improve the quality of life for individuals.

Dr. Thielen is the first surgeon on Maui to perform and offer a direct anterior approach hip replacement. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that replaces a damaged hip joint with an artificial one. It involves making a 4–5 inch incision in front of the hip, rather than the side or back, which allows the surgeon to avoid muscles and tendons without cutting them. This technique can result in less pain, a quicker recovery, and more normal function after surgery. Currently he is the only private practice surgeon on Maui to offer this approach.

At Maui Orthopedic Institute, Dr. Thielen gets to know his patients as individuals allows him to tailor a care plan that more closely meets their needs. Whenever possible, he recommends starting off with the least invasive treatments. He cares for patients of all ages and provides fracture and orthopedic care for shoulders, hips, knees, hands, elbow, and foot.
Every Wednesday Dr. Thielen runs two operating rooms at the Aloha Surgery Center with a specialized total joints team.

Cementless Total Knee Arthoplasty. These are cementless total knee arthroplasty components. You can see the porous surface where the patient’s bone will grow into the implant to create a biological bond. This technology has the potential for being a longer lasting option than traditional cemented components in young, active patients and overweight, patients with good bone quality.
