Today, Bill is living his best life, focusing on physical activity and having the energy to keep up with his children.

During his own childhood though, he struggled with obesity, which followed him to adulthood. 14-hour days at work meant unhealthy eating habits slowly crept in and led to weight gain.

When his first child was born in 2013, he began to focus on his health. Surgery was a far-away option, but not completely off the table.

"I think we should consider it," he told his wife.

In May 2023, he worked with Orlando Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Institute to develop a plan that involved bariatric surgery, lifestyle changes and a nutrition plan.

"It's not the easy way out," says Bill, who's now an avid cyclist preparing for his first triathlon.

When Rhonda’s knee pain got in the way of her quality of life, she knew it was time to officially consider surgery. Her surgeons recommended a total knee replacement on both her left and right knees to resolve her arthritis, but on one condition: she had to lose weight to qualify for surgery.

“I wasn't living my life,” she says. “I was way too young to be living the life that I was living, and it was due to all the weight that I had put on."

She consulted with the team at Orlando Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Institute, where she underwent a duodenal switch performed by Dr. Andre Teixeira. A duodenal switch is a complex bariatric procedure where 80% of the stomach is removed and the small intestine is shortened to help patients with obesity lose weight.

Rhonda has now lost more than 115 pounds since May 2023 and has also successfully undergone knee replacement surgery.

Today, she’s constantly on the move with extra energy for hobbies like thrifting, gardening, yoga and playing with her two grandsons.

“I’m very active now, being able to do the things that I couldn’t do because of the weight holding me back,” she says.

A robotic surgery dynamic duo 🤝

OR Nurse Jamie and Dr. Andre Teixeira’s partnership in the operating room goes back decades, when Jamie helped guide Dr. Teixeira during his residency.

Today, Dr. Teixeira serves as medical director of the Orlando Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Institute, and he and Jamie continue to work together on surgery days.
