Fascia is a thin, stringy layer of connective tissue that surrounds and supports every organ, muscle, nerve, bone, blood vessel, tendon, ligament, and joint in the body. It’s located below the skin and is designed to stretch and move with the body. Fascia also contains nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin, and it tightens when stressed.

When the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth, the surrounding fascia suffers. Limited head and neck mobility, poor posture, and swallow dysfunction are a few examples of fascia being limited.

Tongue tie releases are based on functional issues, not necessarily structural. Individuals with moderate to severe tongue ties can suffer from head/neck/shoulder/back tension, migraines, TMD, sleep disordered breathing, sleep apnea, swallowing dysfunction, poor posture, and more.

Send me a DM to discuss a consult to see if your tongue tie is inhibiting your quality of life.

Mouth taping reduces the negative effects associated with mouth breathing, including: ADHD symptoms, sleep disordered breathing, dry mouth, dental caries, gum disease, bad breath, slowed growth in children, and decreased cognitive ability.

Mouth tape serves as a gentle reminder to keep your lips closed. You are still able to open with the tape on to drink water, talk, etc. when needed.

Always start by taking a slow approach. Initially, wear the tape for a 15-20 minute period, maybe while watching TV or doing another activity, to see how it feels. If you can tolerate that, increase the amount of time until you are comfortable going to sleep with the tape on.

Your dental structure and facial structure both start developing at a young age. The way you breathe helps to form the muscles in your face, neck, and jaw. With proper tongue placement and nasal breathing, your tongue will naturally fill your palate space and will exert upward and outward pressure. This will promote forward growth of the jawbones.

Mouth breathing can lead to development of an elongated, narrow facial shape that does not have room for the teeth or the tongue. Without the upward and outward pressure of the tongue against the palate, the weight and force of the facial muscles will cause the upper jaw to elongate. The bottom jaw isn’t able to grow fully forward and can lead to a returned jaw angle, a retruded chin, crowding of the teeth, and not enough room for the tongue to fit in its proper resting place. This can constrict airway passages, affecting sleep.

Myofunctional therapy serves to improve lip seal, encourage nasal breathing, correct tongue posture, and correct swallowing pattern. Each individual may need help in just 1 of these categories, or all 4. I determine the area(s) of concern with a 90 minute consult for the first visit to see if the patient could benefit from myofunctional therapy.
