Considering private pay speech therapy for your child? Here are FIVE reasons why:

1. No referral needed! You do not need a referral from your child’s pediatrician or another physician for a speech and language evaluation and/or therapy services. That means you as the parent have the power to inquire about and initiate services without needing to break through the red tape.

2. Individualized services! With private pay services, speech and language evaluations and therapy sessions can be child-focused and family-centered! Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - can be customized to your child’s specific needs. Your child’s services can include individual sessions, parent coaching, coordination and collaboration with other providers, and/or IEP consultations!

3. Flexibility in scheduling speech therapy sessions! There is greater flexibility in what evaluations and therapy sessions can look like when an insurance company is not determining what, when, and where things happen. Services can be provided at home, in an office, in a clinic, and/or at your child’s preschool or private school at a frequency and duration that is personalized to your child.

4. Unlimited speech sessions! While insurance companies often pre-determine the number of sessions your child can receive each year regardless of their individual needs, private pay services do not restrict the number or type of sessions.

5. Parents can participate in therapy sessions and receive training and carry-over activities! With private pay services, every last detail is personalized and we are able to tailor sessions to the needs of both the child and the family.

⭐️A game changer for speech evaluations AND therapy sessions⭐️

I was recently in a speech evaluation session and the child I was working with wanted nothing to do with any of the assessments I was attempting to administer. We’ve all been there, right? But what did you have in your speech bag that got you the data you needed to complete the evaluation?

I had my Big Box of Bjorem Speech Publications Sound Cues! As soon as I took those out of my bag, the child was immediately engaged!! They wanted to open the box, see the sound cues, and hear what sounds they made. I was able to use the Big Box with the Bjorem Informal Childhood Apraxia of Speech Assessment and gather an incredible amount of data regarding the child’s speech sound production.

It is hard to know when to seek out a speech-language pathologist (SLP). The signs might be subtle, but are noticeable.

While every child develops at their own rate, five common reasons parents reach out to pediatric SLPs are:

1️⃣ Your child has difficulty communicating basic wants and needs. This can look different across age ranges, with many concerns coming from parents of children between 12-15 months who are not pointing, gesturing, or using spoken words.

2️⃣ Difficulty following directions. Depending on your child’s age, this could be difficulty following simple, routine directions or multi-step directions.

3️⃣ Difficulty imitating sounds. Your child might be having trouble saying particular speech sounds or different word structures [e.g., vowel-consonant (VC), consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC)].

4️⃣ A limited inventory of sounds. Maybe your child is only able to say earlier developing sounds, such as /p/, /b/, and /m/, but they are having trouble with /f/ and /v/. Or maybe your child is only producing vowels, but not consonants.

5️⃣ Difficulty learning and using new words.

Pediatric speech and language therapy helps children enhance their communication skills using various evidence based strategies.

⭐️EXCITED FOR ANOTHER LUNCH AND LEARN TODAY⭐️

As a graduate of the Maternal and Child Health Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Other Related Disabilities (LEND) program at Kennedy Krieger Institute, I value an interdisciplinary approach to both the diagnosis and treatment of speech and language disorders and learning disabilities. Throughout my career I have prioritized collaborating with physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, and teachers in order to determine the most accurate clinical diagnoses and develop individualized plans of care.

The partnership between a child’s pediatrician and speech-language pathologist is an invaluable asset during both the evaluation and treatment processes. This partnership allows for both a child-focused and family-centered approach. It can also ease transitions between early intervention services to school-age services.

The weather is getting warmer and we are getting outside. My three must-haves for outdoor therapy sessions: Bubbles, Bjorem Speech Publications Speech Sound Cues, and SPF.

🫧: Children of every age love blowing bubbles, chasing bubbles, and popping bubbles.

🎤: Speech Sound Cues - I just cannot go anywhere without these. I can target speech sound production, phonological awareness, and early literacy goals with these!

🧴: Sunscreen. An absolute MUST when spending hours in the sun. I always use West Institute Clearshade. Don’t let the Zinc scare you - it rubs right in and protects my face better than any other product I’ve tried.

Infants and toddlers who are identified as having a disability receive early intervention services under the Individuals...
25/04/2022

Infants and toddlers who are identified as having a disability receive early intervention services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C. These services are available for families and children birth through two, inclusive, who qualify and are available regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Children no longer qualify for early intervention services when they turn 3 and must qualify for special education and related services under IDEA Part B.

In order to qualify for early intervention services within the Commonwealth of Virginia, a child must meet one or more of the following criteria:
🔅Be functioning at least 25% below their chronological or adjusted age in cognitive development, communication development, fine and gross motor development, social/emotional development, and/or adaptive development.
🔅Demonstrate atypical development or behavior.
🔅Have a medical diagnosis that has a high probability of resulting in a developmental delay.

But what happens if they do not qualify for early intervention services, specifically for communication? Does that mean that their speech and language skills are developing typically?

The short answer is “Not necessarily.” Not being 25% delayed does not mean ‘typical development’ and your child may benefit from speech and language therapy in order to foster their development in these areas.

Have more questions about early intervention or what to do if your child does not qualify? Let’s stay connected and see how we can help you and your family!

Did You Know That Extended School Year (ESY) Services Are Not Guaranteed for All Students Who Have Individualized Education Programs?

ESY services include specialized instruction in order to maintain skills when school is not typically in session. Every Individualized Education Program (IEP) team should discuss the option of ESY. If your child has a history of regressing and having difficulty relearning skills, the IEP team will need to consider this when proofing wherever or not your child requires ESY.

So what happens if your child does not require ESY, BUT you still want them to receive speech and language services? You can pursue private speech and language services!

There are many advantages to pursing private services, including flexibility in scheduling (length of sessions, frequency of sessions, opportunities for intensives) AND the focus will be on making progress toward speech and language goals, not just maintaining skills.

Questions about private speech therapy over the summer? Leave a message below or call us at (703) 295-2302!

Do You Know What I Did This Weekend? 🧐

I completed the 28 hour online Orofacial Myology training course through Neo-Health Services in order to attain my Qualification in Orofacial Myology (QOM)! 🧠📋

Orofacial Myology “is the study and treatment of the prowl and facial muscles as they related to speech, dentition, chewing/bolts collection, swallowing, and overall mental and physical health” (Sandra R. Holtzman, M.S., CCC-SLP, COM, QOM).

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) may be caused by poor oral habits, like extended pacifier use, teeth clenching, or thumb or finger sucking, upper airway obstruction, tongue ties, structural or muscular differences, dental issues, and/or genetic components.

OMDs may present as:
👄Open mouth posture
💧Drooling
🦷 Dental abnormalities
🍭Atypical swallowing patterns
🗣Speech sound production difficulties

Orofacial myofunctional therapy aims to promote optimal orofacial and dental development through specialized exercises.

Have concerns regarding your child’s oral habits, oral structures or functions, or speech sound production?
