Nightshade vegetables are now known to cause Leaky Gut (just like gluten does in gluten-sensitive people).
Leaky Gut is a medical condition that
damages your small intestine, making it more permeable. This means its ability to filter out harmful things (permeability) is compromised – because holes appear in the tissue lining. We say the gut (intestine) becomes leaky – hence the term “Leaky Gut”.
A damaged small intestine also means its ability to absorb the good things from food is compromised. Leaky Gut causes Malabsorption conditions like anemia and osteoporosis. But these can be cured by correcting the diet after identifying food intolerance.
The most commonly eaten nightshade vegetables are:
Bell peppers (green, red, yellow peppers)
Pepperoncini (Tuscan peppers)
Chili peppers - the most common varieties are:
Anaheim pepper
Cherry pepper (pimento)
Dried versions - cayenne, paprika
Habanero pepper
Jalapeno
Serrano pepper
Tabasco pepper
Thai pepper
Wax peppers
Other nightshade vegetables include:
Eggplant
Gobi berry (Wolf berry)
Ground cherry (physalis)
Potatoes - especially potato skins
Tamarillo (Tree tomato)
Tomatillo (husk cherry, husk tomato, jam berry)
Tomato (all varieties)
Therefore - take care with nightshade vegetables – until you are sure you can tolerate them without symptoms. Remember these are Dose-Dependent – so you can find your threshold level and eat them in moderation only.
You can easily test your sensitivity to nightshade vegetables by removing them
from your diet for 21 days then re-introducing a nightshade vegetable for ONE
meal only and noting all changes in your symptoms. It is best not to consume them two days in a row and rotate them to eat only 1 x per week, if at all, while you are healing your gut wall
