Jared, an avid motorcyclist, faced a life-altering event when he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that left him with multiple fractures and required assistance from a ventilator to breathe. Rushed to a local hospital in Southeast Arizona, he quickly came to terms with the gravity of his condition. Despite spending several weeks in the ICU, where he depended on a care team for all self-care and activities of daily living, he focused on his recovery and the path ahead.
Fortunate to have worn protective gear during the accident, he avoided a traumatic brain injury, yet his body endured significant trauma. As weeks progressed in the ICU, Jared showed steady but slow improvements, however, his inability to wean from the ventilator prompted a crucial decision. He was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Southeast Arizona for extended medical care focusing on ventilator weaning and rehabilitation.
At Cornerstone, an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including physicians and specialists from pulmonology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and wound care, collaborated to develop a personalized care plan tailored to Jared's needs. With ventilator weaning identified as a pivotal goal, the focus turned to enhancing his respiratory function through targeted breathing exercises and therapy.
As part of his rehabilitation, Jared participated in a comprehensive program that combined physical and occupational therapy aimed at restoring strength and independence. He engaged in breathing exercises designed to enhance lung capacity and efficiency, while therapists helped him regain mobility and coordination. Additionally, the wound care team closely monitored and treated the injuries to his lower extremities, ensuring optimal healing and preventing any complications.
Throughout his time at Cornerstone, Jared demonstrated incredible determination. By the end of his stay, he achieved remarkable success, being officially weaned off the ventilator, and breathing 100% on his own without supplemental oxygen. He was also decannulated and his diet was upgraded to include a variety of his favorite foods, which caused his spirits to soar as he regained a sense of normalcy. Jared also went from being stuck in bed to moving his wheelchair by himself for 200 feet.
His progress was truly inspiring as he approached each day with determination, driven by the goal of returning to the activities he loved. Finally, after passing all his care plan goals, Jared was ready to be discharged to a lower level of care, where he could continue his rehabilitation and strength training. The care team at Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Southeast Arizona wishes Jared all the success in his recovery.
