If you ride a motorcycle or drive any sort of motor vehicle, please carry a medical kit that enables you to and save a life! Here is yet another example of motorcycle versus vehicle, resulting in catastrophic damage to the rider’s leg. Great work by the first responders and aviation unit to stop life-threatening bleeding, stabilize the patient, and transport them rapidly to definitive care!

Sanson, a military dog in Colombia, is being hailed as a hero after he saved the lives of dozens of soldiers during a bomb explosion in Antioquia. Sanson was helping troops conduct a reconnaissance operation when the army said he triggered a device that had been planted on a “community-used path.” One of his legs was shattered, but Sanson dragged his body to his handler.

“Our lost one of his limbs but saved the lives of 36 soldiers and hundreds of residents of the La Raya hamlet in Yondó , who pass through this area daily,” the Second Division of the National Army said.

Sanson received surgery and had to have that shattered leg amputated. He will no longer be able to serve with the army, they said, “but his legacy will live on in every soldier he bravely protected.”

🫡🇺🇸 Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary recognized the air crew of the MH-65 rescue helicopter 6553 for their heroic actions in Kerrville, Texas on July 4.

AST3 Scott Ruskan, the rescue swimmer that assisted 165 people into various aircraft, and Lt. lan Hopper were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for their extraordinary heroism in flight.

The Distinguished Flying Cross, established in 1926, is the highest U.S. military award for aerial achievement, recognizing single acts of heroism or extraordinary accomplishment. Ruskan’s role in saving 165 lives, serving as the only triage coordinator during his first mission, was particularly highlighted.

The Air Medal was awarded to Lt. Blair Ogujiofor (co-pilot) and AMT3 Seth Reeves (flight mechanic) for their heroic contributions to the mission, including navigating treacherous conditions and ensuring the helicopter’s operational success.

AST3 Ruskan and AMT Reeves were both meritoriously advanced to Second Class Petty Officers on the spot by Secretary Noem.

Secretary Noem praised the crew as “American heroes,” singling out Ruskan for saving 165 victims and embodying the Coast Guard’s spirit. She noted the collaborative effort with state and local responders, including the Texas National Guard, Texas Task Force 1, and over 20 agencies.

Awesome article in Journal of Special Operations Medicine addressing contingency blood issues. While there aren’t definitive answers on this, it does help to look at some of the science behind it. AABB has published standards, exceptions approved by medical director.
Expired Blood? RBCs=42d, WB(CPD)=21d, (CPDA-1)= 35d. These limits are primarily based on % of hemolysis. Risk= infection and hemolyzed RBCs. Expired blood has been used successfully in GWOT and during COVID. The authors suggest in emergency situations that RBCs and WB are likely safe and effective up to 7d post expiration.
Temperature deviation? Standards: Storage=1-6c, Transport 1-10c. Deviating between storage and transport likely no effect. The authors looked at studies and suggest WB held at room temp for up to 5 days may still be effective.
Walking blood bank to replenish Whole Blood stockpile: Note** this is how the ROLO program started (the bag pictured above), we used prescreened low titer donors forward deployed, pulled off units and stored them for missions. JTS states you should refrigerate within 8 hours then store for the regular times; Joint Blood Program office approval is required to store longer than 24hrs.
Lots more to discuss on this topic (using deceased blood, cell salvage, autologous, etc..) but good to keep the conversation going on how we can solve blood supply issues in less-than-ideal conditions. Let me know your thoughts.

Teamwork in the face of a nightmare 💪🏼🫡🙏🏼

from

An exclusive note from Scott RUSKAN during this moment in the news cycle:

“Thank you to everyone for all the support and love the last few days, I can’t even describe how grateful I am for all of you!!
Seriously it’s something I can’t describe if I tried.
I guess I have the spotlight for a second and I really want to emphasize how the REAL heroes are my crew of AC LT lan Hopper, CP LT Blair Ogujiofor, and FM AMT3 Seth Reeves for getting us on scene after battling some of the worst flying conditions we’ve been in and getting us there safely. They each saved the aircraft on MULTIPLE occasions during our flight and they need the credit for this as well.
There are also truly legendary crews from Air Station Corpus Christi, Houston, and Miami in the fight now as this is being sent out and THEY need the recognition as well but are simply quiet professionals doing the mission.
While it’s super epic for me to be called “An American Hero” by so many people l’ve looked up to and respect, there is still an on going search and rescue mission in Texas with Coast Guard, DPS, National Guard, Task Force 1, and probably hundreds of other agencies. It was a privilege to work with these professionals that just crushed it on so many fronts. For me, it looks like going forward l’ll be in the media a lot just showing light to what our crew of 6553 and others were experiencing and sharing that with the public. Not the role I’ve ever wanted, but the role l’ve been asked and that’s my new mission let’s go! I still believe the main focus should and is those still on the ground in the fight. Those are the real heroes right now!
Those on scene, thank you and stay safe.
Those who have been affected you have my deepest condolences and prayers.

🧨 Fireworks: Safety Facts Everyone Should Know
Fireworks injuries have reached new heights w/ 2024 witnessing a 52% spike in ED injury visits. Nearly half of all fireworks injuries happen to innocent bystanders who weren’t even handling the devices. Children are particularly vulnerable w/ 25% of pediatric injuries occurring to those simply watching from what parents believed was a safe distance. Sparklers, often considered the “safe” option for children, cause 1,700 ED visits/yr and burn at up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Over 1/2 of sparkler injuries occur in children
