L'Arche Chicago

L'Arche Chicago L'Arche Chicago is a community of people with and without disabilities sharing life together in faith

Our community is anchored around three homes on the west side of Chicago and Forest Park. In each home, four adults with disabilities ("core members") share life with assistants who come to stay for a year or more.

We’ve had such an incredible week celebrating our DSPs! Our community came together with handmade posters, delicious baked treats, and even a joyful s’mores celebration. Still, no gesture can capture just how thankful we are for our DSPs.🎉

Every day, our DSPs show up with energy, ready to tackle anything the day throws their way, whether that's helping Jean build her new robot dog, administering medications, driving Stephan to his many sports games, or joining Casey’s lively dance parties. 🐶🚗🎼

Thank you for everything you do, not just this week but every single day!💛

Our ears are ringing! We're featured on WBBM Newsradio with Terry Keshner! 🎙️

During the interview, Terry stops by St. Joseph House, where Anders, one of our core members, is thrilled to give a tour of his new home. Anders was extra proud that he put up his Halloween decorations in time for the tour.

Terry captures the heart of our community when he describes us as “L’Arche Chicago, an ark in a world with a lot of rough seas.”💙

Happy DSP (Direct Support Professionals) Appreciation Week!🎉

We’re so excited to celebrate our amazing DSPs all week long. Every day, our DSP Assistants bring joy and care to our community, whether by visiting the planetarium or a car show, sharing laughter, prayer, and celebration around the dinner table, or simply being a trusted friend.❤️

How have you seen DSPs share joy in our community?

Anders is known for two catchphrases in community: “You gotta stay busy” and “I did (insert an absurd number) of steps today.”

True to his words, it was no surprise when Anders quickly connected with his new neighbor, Megan, who has a large garden and needs help tending it.🌷

During his weekly visits, Megan enjoys learning from Anders as he shares gardening techniques and plant names. Just this week, he taught her how to identify goldenrods. 🌼💛

Once a month, our Assistants come together on a Thursday afternoon for a communal ritual we fondly call Formation.

Last month, our Assistants wrote a poem highlighting cherished experiences within community, inspired by the recently departed Andrea Gibson’s ‘I Love’ poem.

It's been over half a year since four of our core members moved into our brand-new home, St. Joseph House, and we couldn't be happier. It has been a joy to watch John and Noah move around freely and to have ample space for the community to gather.🏡❤️

For years, L'Arche Chicago aspired to create a home that would meet the changing needs of core members as they age. In 2024, our dream came to fruition when St. Joseph House construction was completed and four core members moved in.

We created this video because we want to share the impact this home has had on our community and our deep gratitude for all who made our dream a reality.

Our L’Arche hearts are overflowing with gratitude for everyone who supported our 11th Annual L’Arche Golf Classic! We appreciated sharing the sunny weather with all who could join us in person at the beautiful River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst.

Since its inception, the Golf Classic has helped make everything we do possible, and this year was no exception. Together, we raised over $65,000 to help our core members thrive in the place they call home. This includes providing Friendship House with the much-needed funds to build a new roof, paving the way for solar panels and clean-energy.

Check out our event page for more pictures: https://larchechicago.org/event/golf/

Thank you to all who came out to support our mission. You made the day a success! ⛳💛

Christianne, David, and Iggy are thrilled to pose in front of their brand-new windows!🏡

All of us at L'Arche Chicago are excited to be recipients of a $250,000 award from the City of Chicago's Climate Infrastructure Fund, created to help achieve the City’s Climate Action Plan goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 62% by 2040.

Our first home, Angel House, has been outfitted with all new energy-efficient windows and will receive new electrical wiring to support all-electric appliances, including water heaters and dryers, a new insulated roof, and a full solar panel system.

We're excited for these upgrades and the ability to participate in the work of mitigating the effects of climate change as we accelerate the city’s equitable transition to a green economy.🌳💚

Come and see

Our mission is to celebrate the unique value of each person and to create lifelong places of belonging through our three Chicago homes that empower residents to share their gifts with their neighborhood, city, country and world.

L’Arche Chicago was founded in 2000 by Sr. Maria Zeimen when she welcomed Elbert Lott and Jean Wilson to live in community in a home on the West Side of the city. Almost twenty years later, the Chicago community continues to live together in a spirit of belonging, support and peace-making. We aim to be a sign that a more humane world is possible.

We welcome you to “come and see” the joy and magic that is L’Arche Chicago.
