The Time Out approach is something we proudly put into practice every day when caring for those with cognitive decline and we like to inspire families to utilize the same approach, so your loved one always feels supported.

Yes, Time Out is exactly what it sounds like – a sports analogy – but at The Arbor Company, it’s also so much more. Just like when a football coach calls a timeout, sometimes caregivers of loved ones with dementia need to take a step back and regroup when navigating difficult behavior or resistance to complete necessary tasks.

What is Time Out at The Arbor Company?
Our Time Out approach allows Arbor team members to take a moment for themselves and regroup when a resident is reluctant to receive assistance. Director of Dementia Training, Susan Robbins, explains how sometimes walking away or taking a step back is necessary when caring for a loved one with dementia.

If we as caregivers have the expectation to change our approach, rather than expecting loved ones to change theirs, it opens the door for a more respectful and compassionate bond.
