What kind of screen reader user are you?

Explorer
Still learning the terrain… moving carefully through unfamiliar layouts
Mostly Tab/Shift+Tab
Every page feels like navigating in the dark

Navigator
You move in stealth mode
Headings, landmarks, shortcuts... clean and efficient
You start to notice where things break

Ninja/Expert
Fast. Precise. No hesitation
Navigates instantly using shortcuts and structure
Finds what's broken before otgers even get there

Did you know that screen reader ninjas earn about $50k per year?

Jobs like:
Digital Accessibility Tester
QA / Usability Tester
Accessibility Specialist
Compliance Analyst

These roles rely on assistive tech every single day...
not just to navigate, but to test, evaluate, and improve real digital experiences.

That’s the difference between a rookie… and a ninja.

If you’re ready to level up your screen reader skills and tap into these opportunities,
join our upcoming AMA.

Bee found his place... at home.
He earns, provides, and gets to be there for his family.

He is a certified digital accessibility tester and one of our CAT Program Instructors. And he'll be hosting WCATea, our podcast, very soon!

But it wasn’t always like this.

We asked him about his biggest struggle as a blind job seeker when he was starting out.

He shared:
“Something that Tanner said has stuck with me for the last few years. Job seeking isn’t about putting out a thousand applications into the ether; you may get the occasional interview, but generally, you will be hit with denial after denial.

The sad truth is that no matter how skillful you are, no matter how strong your resume may be, interviewers will see the blind status and not want to bother. It’s not out of malice; it’s because they want an employee where they don’t have to go any further than necessary, and for a blind employee, they’ll have to go the extra mile for reasonable accommodations.

Worse still are the silences, and the questions that invariably arise.
What could I have done better?
Did I err in some way?
Was it something I did, or totally out of my control?

That was the worst thing I did. I sent out hundreds of applications in seven years of job seeking, and the rejections and the silences tore down my resolve and self-confidence.”

Does anyone resonate with Bee in this stage?

When the document gets printed, signed, and scanned…
we don’t just lose accessibility... we lose access for real people.

What was once readable with a screen reader becomes a blank experience for someone who is blind or has a disability.

And the hardest part?
We did everything right… until that one step.

This is how accessibility breaks in everyday government workflows... quietly, repeatedly, and often unnoticed.

Sheri Byrne-Haber explains how to stop this from happening

For millions of people who are blind or have low vision, navigating healthcare can come with extra barriers.

These barriers don't start at the hospital door, they start long before. In the app that wasn't designed with accessibility in mind. Forms that can't be read by a screen reader. Instructions that only come in print.

This World Health Day, we're calling for a healthcare system where accessibility isn't the exception. It's the standard.

🌍 Happy World Health Day. Here's to a healthier, more inclusive world for all.

A lot of people ask what it’s like to be a Certified AccessAbility Testing (CAT) Program student.

You’re probably picturing lectures. Yes, that’s part of it.

But sometimes, we turn WCAG review into.... Jeopardy!

Here's a clip of a session with our current CAT students and apprentices playing Jeopardy, the AO way.

During the first round, Michaela, one of the Espurrs have been crushing it at $1,000. Way to go, Michaela!

Hosted by Bee Yang and Ellie Alvarado as the scorer, this review is just as exciting as it sounds.

Does she keep the lead?
Or does someone take her down?
Enjoy this clip.

And stay tuned, we’re announcing the podcast name later today.

If you have an open VR case and you're interested in the CAT Program, see here if you qualify: https://accessabilityofficer.com/vocational-rehabilitation -form

Feeling like I've had a pretty good week! Yesterday I got to chat with a professional cinematographer and he looked at some of my videos. Y'all he complimented me on my lighting and said that is better than lighting he has seen in videos by sighted people! I will count that as a win this week!

Now it's your turn - share your wins of the week so we can celebrate you!
