In cyberspace boundaries are usually constructed by the user.

If adolescents and young adults are still maturing, still developing their personal boundaries, how do they learn to create good boundaries online and on social media sites?

Yes, they are practicing through trial and error, just as they do IRL, but in cyberspace, limits are few, and thus the ability to safeguard oneself is tenuous at best, and learning to protect oneself becomes paramount.

Swipe to uncover 4 steps that can help your young clients with online boundaries

Internal boundaries that are both firm and flexible allow our clients to protect their mental and emotional well-being while also adapting to life’s changes and challenges.

Firm boundaries help maintain personal integrity and self-respect, while flexible boundaries enable clients to engage meaningfully with others, adjust to new situations, and grow from experiences.

This balance supports resilience and healthier relationships, fundamental to overall mental health.

The average person is spending 6 hours and 40 minutes a day online, scrolling through social media, checking emails, and consuming digital content.

While technology has its benefits, we need to set boundaries to protect our mental health and well-being.

By limiting the time we spend online, we can reduce stress, improve sleep, and foster deeper connections in the real world, with the people around us. It also helps us stay present in the moment and prioritize self-care.

🌐 Celebrating World Social Media Day! 🌐

Social media has transformed the way we connect, offering invaluable support and community, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, with this increased use, it’s essential to be mindful of its impact on mental health, particularly for young people.

Seeking validation is a natural part of growing up. However, when self-worth heavily depends on external validation, negative feedback can significantly harm one's self-esteem. 🤳

By understanding the factors that increase a young person's vulnerability to negative social media experiences, we can create better interventions. Young individuals with a history of trauma or adversity are more susceptible to online bullying, negative feedback, and difficulties in regulating their social media use. 💬

Let’s use this day to foster healthy social media habits and support the mental well-being of our youth.
