Vincent Bach was born Vincent Schrotenbach just outside of Vienna, Austria on March 24th, 1890. While Vincent started his early musical career on violin, he soon developed a love and passion for the cornet. Although he developed into an accomplished cornetist, Vincent’s father insisted he pursue a vocation in mechanical engineering. After gaining his degree in mechanical engineering and at the out

break of WW1, Vincent shortened his name to Vincent Bach and came to the United States where he played with the Boston Symphony. While on tour with the BSO, he damaged his mouthpiece and decided to design, make, and play his own mouthpiece. Colleagues asked to have mouthpieces for themselves, and in 1918 he started his business of making brass mouthpieces. Musicians frequently referred to his Bach trumpet as the “the ‘Stradivarius’ of a trumpet”, thus inspiring the brand name Bach Stradivarius. Bach sold his company to The H & A Selmer Company, a leading manufacturer and distributor of student, amateur, and professional instruments in 1961. True to Vincent’s vision, Conn-Selmer still follows the Bach tradition of excellence.

Jerry Hey has trusted the Bach sound for most of his career. He's performed and arranged on over 1,700 records, shaping the sound of pop music from the Hollywood studio scene for over three decades. As a first-call arranger for Quincy Jones, Jerry's credits also include arrangements for Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Frank Sinatra, Donna Summer, George Benson, Earth Wind and Fire and dozens more.

It was incredible to have him in the Conn Selmer Chicago Studio with Bach artists Louis Dowdeswell, Tom Walsh, and Mike Davis, showcasing how brand new Bach 190S37 trumpets can still deliver the same unmistakable sound that Jerry's legendary arrangements are known for.

“If you’re deciding what instrument to buy…get what you really want to play and sound like—get a Bach.”

On April 16th, 1966, Duke Ellington performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at Music Hall in Cincinnati, Ohio, in one of the orchestra's first “Pops" concerts. Without prior notice, Ellington announced from the piano that he understood there was someone in the trumpet section who liked to play jazz, then asked, "Marie, will you come on down?" Marie Speziale came to the center of the stage and played a blues with Ellington and his rhythm section, which included Joe Benjamin on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums. After a brief discussion, Speziale, along with another CSO colleague, performed Johnny Green's "Body and Soul," followed by another blues to end the set. She considers this one of the many highlights of her legendary thirty-two-year career.

On April 12th and 13th 1968, brass ensembles from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and Chicago Symphony recorded the historic grammy winning album, The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli at Town Hall in Philadelphia.

When asked about the recording, Vincent Cichowicz, Second Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony replied, “That was a major highlight of my career. It was no easy task to organize the schedules of three symphony brass sections. When it was finally arranged, it was a wonderful experience. There was basically no rehearsal. That by itself sounds dangerous. We sat down and we didn’t even tune. Almost everything was done in one or two takes. We simply sat down and made the most out of the music that was put in front of us. It was a fantastic collegial experience.”

All six trumpet players on the album performed on Bach trumpets:
Bernard Adelstein, Thomas Wohlwender, Adolph Herseth, Vincent Cichowicz, Gilbert Johnson, and Seymour Rosenfeld

Benny Benack helps us celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with the albums that have most impacted his musical journey.

🔷 Clifford Brown with Strings - Clifford Brown
“As a trumpet player, there’s no better sound on a ballad than the lush, warmth and sparkle of Clifford’s playing - virtuosic yet melodic!”

🔷 Hub-Tones - Freddie Hubbard
“My favorite trumpet solo of all-time is on ‘You’re My Everything’ and encapsulates everything I adore about Freddie’s playing, time feel, language, and swagger.”

🔷 Oscar Peterson Trio + One - Clark Terry
“No one exemplifies the joy of Jazz more than Clark Terry (except perhaps Pops himself!)…he is my favorite player for the blues, bar none.”

🔷 Gumbo Nouveau - Nicholas Payton
“Nicholas’ deference for Louis Armstrong is palpable on this tribute to all things NOLA, and at my young age, this album caught my ear like no other.”

🔷 Standard Time, Vol. 3: The Resolution of Romance - Wynton Marsalis
“I had a cassette tape of this in my car driving around as a kid… Wynton’s sound and restraint playing beautiful ballads on this record informed my playing nearly as much as Clifford Brown w/Strings above…just a perfect trumpet sound and immaculate phrasing.”
