Buckminster Fuller asked us to do. We're a mother/daughter duo and full-time RVers on a Transformation Roadtrip. Our goal is the awakening and evolution of human consciousness. We're all about transforming our species from Homo Sapiens to Homo Amor in our lifetimes. We must awake to Love as the Universal Story, and Love as the Destiny of Humanity if we all want to survive and thrive. To “Thrive, Love Life, and Transform the World,” we each must rise and play our Unique Self Symphony, as the late Barbara Marx Hubbard put it. To that end, we’re bring all our skills to bear and throwing in our whole kitchen sink. We’ve got science behind our spirituality and practical skills behind our ideals. About our name, "Joy Gypsies":
Some may see our use of "Gypsies" as disrespectful and a cultural appropriation of the derogatory term for the Romani people. (And others might dismiss our use of the word "Joy".) Please hear us out. On the use of "Gypsies":
1. "Gypsies" has been a pejorative term historically for the Romani people. These traditional nomads were mistakenly thought to have come from Egypt, so bigoted and ignorant people often called them "gypsies". (Linguistic and genetic evidence shows the Romani probably came instead from the Indian subcontinent.) Modern Romani are a proud people with a long cultural heritage and still must fight for respect, visibility and equity from the majority groups around them. The struggle for equity shaped their history and still shapes the present, not only for the Romani but for many other minority peoples around the globe.
2. Through our positive use of "Gypsies", we reclaim the power of language and the power to redefine words and what they mean. We are both female, and my daughter Xochitl is half Mexican. Our experience is not the same as the Romani, yet we know something of the struggle for equity in a white male-privileged world. We hereby reclaim "gypsy" as a positive attribute, as travelers who are willing to see, experience and inspire more of the world as the unique selves that we are. We proclaim the right to help make the world a safer place for traveling peoples of all kinds, because the world needs to be a safer place for all people. The Romani are evolving in their perception of the term "gypsy" too. As a generic term, "gypsy" has come to mean anyone with a nomadic lifestyle and so it has been losing its negative connotations. Some Romani who have been surveyed no longer mind the term even when applied to themselves, while others still feel deeply disrespected by it. We travel full time, and we are joyful in in that travel and the reach the nomadic lifestyle gives us. That brings us to the word "Joy". In modern American culture, we've witnessed a "dumbing down" of our capacity for joy. Delight and unbridled happiness have gone out of fashion. Happiness, humor and joy in nearly every comedy show, book, news story and movie has been tempered with a compulsory "dark side" to make them appear more "real" and "human". No hero's story is told without the "human" failings getting equal treatment. Joy in its purity is dismissed as gullibility and too much innocence. At the same time, loneliness, depression, addiction and suicide have risen, and we don't believe that's a coincidence. We reclaim the right to joy. We call ourselves Joy Gypsies to reclaim two words that modern Western culture has disrespected but that fit us--perfectly. Words have power, words shape our thoughts, and words evolve. We recognize the power in words to harm and to heal. We're Joy Gypsies on a Transformation Roadtrip.
