Family Medicine Center invited their patients, families and staff to recognize people living with or caring for people effected by autism. We offered puzzle pieces to write a note of encouragement or the name of a loved one living with autism, and place the puzzle piece in the canopy of our autism tree. We support everyone with autism and their caregivers meeting the challenges of each new day, and invite you to honor people you know on the autism spectrum.” April is autism acceptance/awareness month but we recognize these hero’s and salute their efforts every day!

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH CHALLENGE
Day Four (Our Challenge to You)

During National Nutrition Month I challenge you to journal your food and beverage intake for one week…take a good look at everything you eat and drink. Did you eat on a schedule or grab and go as able? Did you get 5 vegetables/fruits daily or eat chips and pizza rolls? Do you plan meals or order delivery at the end of most days for convenience? I encourage you to track on one of the free phone apps such as MyFitnessPal. It’s easier than writing things on paper; we always have our phones on us, making tracking apps easy to use. I will let you in on a secret…TRACKING is the #1 predictor of successful long-term weight management. That is why Weight Watchers was successful; accountability is a great motivator. Having to log everything you put in your mouth makes you think “Do I really want/need this? Could I make a healthier choice?”

Then I challenge you to make a change….try a protein, a vegetable and a fruit you haven’t had yet this year. Stop sugary beverages for one month and see what happens. I’ve had a number of patients lose 20 pounds just stopping soda on a daily basis. Do something GOOD for YOURSELF. Others will follow. We go into the schools and teach kids about nutrition, but they learn best from daily examples of healthy living by the people they are around most often. If you need some help, talk to your doctor for advice on getting started. If you have access to a diabetes educator, dietician/nutritionist or lifestyle coach, schedule a meeting with them to discuss ways to make changes to your current way of eating. Do it TODAY. You’re the only one of you we have!!

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH CHALLENGE
Day Three (Food Choices)

Now look at WHAT you choose to eat….do you get protein from different sources, such as lean meats, nuts (walnuts and almonds are best), eggs, fish and plants like broccoli? Are your carbs empty calories like mac and cheese and rice or do you eat beans, squash, peas and beets which provide lots of fiber, vitamins and nutrients our body needs to prevent disease and stay strong and healthy? Do we drink sugared sodas, juice and high sugar coffee creamers or choose herbal teas with antioxidants (that prevent cancer) and water that hydrates our body and helps the kidneys and liver filter out impurities from our bodies?

The choices are ours to make, and it is getting harder to choose healthy foods due to rising costs and constant demands on our time. Healthy meals take time to plan…we can’t just eat a butternut squash, it has to be peeled, cut and roasted or otherwise cooked before we can enjoy this nutritious food.
