Rural health care is at a crossroads, and Florida's rural residents are counting on state and federal leadership to preserve access to care. FHA President and CEO Mary Mayhew weighed in on the conversation, emphasizing the critical importance of supporting rural hospitals to ensure that rural residents have timely access to lifesaving care when they need it most.

“Our rural hospitals play such a vital role for people across Florida,” she said. “When you’re dealing with an emergency situation, a rural hospital and its services can mean the difference between life and death.”

Our rural hospitals are stalwarts in their respective communities: employing, treating and providing immeasurable value to those in their care. FHA is grateful for Florida Congressman Vern Buchanan's leadership in introducing the Hospital Inpatient Services Modernization Act last week, which aims to expand Hospital at Home programs for five more years. Upon its passage, the legislation would ensure 23 Florida hospitals can continue to deliver acute care to patients in the comfort of their homes.

"...if the needed funding for Medicaid is reduced, in the future, we may see more rural hospitals close. And of course, when a rural hospital or any hospital closes, you also lose access to the physicians in the community. You’re forcing people to travel farther and farther distances to get access to health care. We already have OB-GYN (specialists who deliver babies) deserts in Florida," said FHA President and CEO Mary Mayhew in response to the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill.
