It’s common knowledge that sugary drinks can cause tooth decay, but did you know that sugar-free beverages can also have negative effects on your dental health? While drinks with less sugar reduce your risk for tooth decay, it doesn’t remove it entirely and this is due to the acidity found in sugar-free drinks. The lower the pH of a food or beverage, the higher the risk for tooth erosion and this is typical of diet sodas, juices, and energy drinks. The harmful acids in diet drinks weaken tooth enamel, resulting in decay over time. We recommend switching to tooth-friendly alternatives such as water, milk, plain sparkling water, or diluted juices. Drinking through a straw can also reduce the acids’ contact with your teeth. The best way to ensure your teeth are happy and healthy is to visit us for your bi-annual exam. Give us a call to schedule your appointment at (815) 578-1000.

Throughout your life, you may experience changes or an imbalance in your hormones. This can actually mess with the way your body reacts to bacteria. Women are more prone to hormone-causing bad breath, especially due to pregnancy, menopause, and some contraceptives. If you notice a change in your hormones that seems to be causing bad breath, you likely need to make an appointment with both your primary care physician as well as us! This helps us develop an oral care routine that best fits you and your needs. Have questions about our dental services? We'd be happy to help you out! Call us at (815) 578-1000.

Black hairy tongue is a condition that makes the tongue appearance dark and furry. It is caused by poor hygiene and dead cells building up on the tiny bumps on the tongue’s surface. These bumps, known as papillae, can become longer than usual and trap food, drinks, to***co, bacteria, and yeast, which can in turn stain the tongue. Although it looks alarming, a black hairy tongue is usually painless and doesn’t have any adverse health effects with it usually going away on its own through proper mouth and tongue cleaning. For a thorough clean and oral care regimen developed for your specific condition, contact us at (815) 578-1000.

Your mouth is home to millions of different bacteria and while brushing and flossing your teeth is a great way to keep your mouth clean, it doesn’t remove the bacteria from your tongue. This bacterium produces sulfur compounds that lead to bad breath and other health issues. Use a tongue scraper or a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your tongue. After cleaning, be sure to rinse with mouthwash and thoroughly rinse your toothbrush with water. You’ll know your tongue is fresh and clean when all the discolored debris disappears and you’re left with a clean pink tongue! Contact us at (815) 578-1000 to schedule your bi-annual appointment!
