Get outside today. 🌲
Let Mother Nature Mother.

🌞Morning sun: Is critical in syncing our circadian rhythms so we sleep better at night. It also improves our energy as it directly powers our mitochondria (increases number and function) which are responsible for our energy levels. Morning sun is also essential for creating vitamin D as well as boosting dopamine and serotonin.

🕊️Birdsongs: Several studies have researched the effect of bird songs on our nervous system. One study found that within 6 minutes of of listening to bird songs, anxiety and paranoia were significantly reduced. Another study found that nature sounds facilitated recovery from sympathetic activation after a psychological stress.

🌊Cold water: In the book, “Blue Mind”, Marine Biologist, Wallace J. Nichols states “Being near water allows us to access a semi-meditative state known as “drifting”. Drifting is a special form of attention where we are engaged with the world around us but not focused on getting something done.”
Studies have shown that just looking at a body of water can induce a relaxation response and decrease heart rate and blood pressure.

🗻Nature views: Studies have shown nature views helps patients tolerate pain, overcome adverse effects, and have lower length of stay at the hospital.

🌻 Scent of Flowers and Herbs: When you smell an aromatic flower or herb, dopamine, serotonin and endorphins are released as well as the limbic system is activated. Smelling it can relieve stress and anxiety, reduce pain, increase alertness and mental clarity, and promote feelings of calmness by shifting the body into a parasympathetic state.

🌲Forest air: Studies have shown that a walk in the forest can decrease stress hormones such as cortisol, decreases proteins involved in inflammation, increase relaxation, and increase NK cell activity. A new study showed that a 1 hour walk in nature decreases amygdala activity following the walk and can have salutogenic effects on brain regions related to stress.

Black History Month is often framed as a time of remembrance. We look back. We honor. We celebrate those who paved the way.
But this year, I chose to look around. To be in the present and celebrate what I see.

Through the Still We Rise, Still We Lead series, I had the privilege of sitting in conversation with leaders across industries, finance, law, entrepreneurship, publishing, community development, strategy, and innovation. Each guest brought a distinct perspective. Each story expanded what Black leadership looks like in real time.

So, check out their stories, listen to their interviews. Each one is making a better community today.
