When we spend time outdoors, the cholesterol in our skin cells is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet light. This provides the energy for us to produce Vitamin D in our bodies. Vitamin D is important for absorbing minerals from our food like calcium and phosphate. These minerals keep our teeth, bones and muscles healthy. Research also shows that adequate levels of Vitamin D can boost weight loss, fight disease and reduce depression. We all know how much of a mood-booster it can be when the sun is shining. Lack of social connectedness is linked to decreased well-being, but nature, it seems, can serve as a substitute for human connection. Yoga lowers cortisol levels. If that doesn’t sound like much, consider this. Normally, the adrenal glands secrete cortisol in response to an acute crisis, which temporarily boosts immune function. If your cortisol levels stay high even after the crisis, they can compromise the immune system. Temporary boosts of cortisol help with long-term memory, but chronically high levels undermine memory and may lead to permanent changes in the brain.☺️

Nature doesn’t just have an effect on us as individuals. It helps us feel more connected to other people, experience collective joy, and empathize with others. A study on a group of schoolchildren living in Barcelona found that those who lived closer to green spaces and beaches got along better with one another and were more likely to show prosocial behavior — actions showing concern and empathy for one another. 😊
This effect carries over to our wider communities. Residents in urban areas with more greenery have better neighborly relations and less violent crime.😊

Exercises that strengthen and stabilize the core can promote agility and prevent accidents from stumbling or falling. Improved balance is one of the most important benefits of yoga, especially as you get older. Poses that require you to stand on one leg, and, for more advanced practitioners, turn you upsidedown in an inversion, can be a great way to build the core strength to hold you upright. ☺️️
