April 11–17 is Black Maternal Health Week.

While postpartum depression is the most well-known, there’s so much more that can impact a birthing person’s mental health—like postpartum anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and even psychosis. These are all part of what we call Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), and they can begin during pregnancy or anytime in the months (even years) after birth.

As a Black mother and a trained Perinatal Mental Health professional, I’m deeply passionate about creating a safe space for Black women navigating the complex, layered realities of postpartum and parenthood.

You don’t have to go through it alone. Let’s talk.

Celebrate Counselor Awareness Month April 2025!

April marks National Counseling Awareness Month, a time to recognize the power of therapy, celebrate mental health professionals, and break the stigma around seeking support.

Whether you're a long-time therapy advocate or just starting to explore the idea, this month is all about highlighting why counseling matters.

Therapy isn’t just about talking through problems.

It's about growth, healing, and learning the tools to navigate life’s challenges.

It can help with everything from managing stress and anxiety to improving relationships and building confidence.

Seeking support isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of self-awareness and strength.

💡 Ways to Celebrate & Get Involved:

✔️ Wear teal on Teal Day to show support for mental health awareness.

✔️ Share your story - whether therapy changed your life or you just want to encourage others, your words can make a difference.

✔️ Thank a counselor who has made a positive impact in your life. A simple “thank you” can mean so much.

✔️ Educate yourself by reading about therapy, listening to mental health podcasts, or even scheduling a session.

✔️ Join the conversation using and help break the stigma.

This month, take time to reflect on your own well-being, explore resources, and support those who make mental health care possible.

💙 Let’s celebrate, educate, and support one another - because mental health matters every single day.

Happy Counseling Awareness Month! ✨

I felt compelled to share!

There is a belief that having OCD means that you like things clean, tidy, and organized. In reality, OCD can be a debilitating mental health disorder that leaves those affected trapped in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions.

Perinatal OCD is a mental health condition characterized by repetitive, unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and irrational, excessive urges to do certain actions (compulsions). It is estimated that 7.8% of pregnant individuals and 16.9 % of postpartum individuals, and some partners, will experience Perinatal OCD.

Repetitive, intrusive images and thoughts are very frightening and can feel like they come “out of the blue.” Research has shown that these images are anxious in nature, not delusional, and have a very low risk of being acted upon. It is far more likely that the parent experiencing symptoms may take steps to avoid triggers and what they fear is potential harm to the baby.

Perinatal OCD is treatable, and help is available. You do not need a diagnosis to reach out for help. For help resources, visit https://loom.ly/Ax0CXp0.
