Day 26 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month; of Cerebrospinal Fluid: The total volume of CSF in the adult ranges from140 to 270 ml. The volume of the ventricles is about 25 ml. CSF is produced at a rate of 0.2 - 0.7 ml per minute or 600-700 ml per day. The circulation of CSF is aided by the pulsations of the choroid plexus and by the motion of the cilia of ependymal cells. An excessive build up CSF in the ventricles of the brain is known as Hydrocephalus.

Day 24 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: A programmable shunt is a type of ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) that is used for treatment for hydrocephalus. The goal of a programmable shunt is to reduce the abnormally high pressure inside the brain. This is achieved by placing a catheter in the brain that allows drainage of excess fluid into the abdomen. A programmable shunt has an adjustable valve which allows you to modify the amount of fluid drained after the shunt is implanted.

Day 22 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Hydrocephalus can be detected as early as 18 weeks in-utero via ultrasound. Ventricles in the brain should measure 10mm or less. Any measurement over 10mm is a sign of Hydrocephalus in a fetus.

Day 19 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. Surgery is needed for an infected shunt. Antibiotics can stop infection in the CSF, but since the shunt is not a living thing, antibiotics cannot reach all of the bacteria stuck to it. Even if the infection in the CSF clears up, it may come back if the shunt stays infected. Therefore, they need to remove the shunt and give your child antibiotics until all of the infection in the CSF has gone. Then, a new shunt is inserted.

Day 14 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Shunt systems are imperfect devices. Complications may include mechanical failure, infections, obstructions, and the need to lengthen or replace the catheter. Generally, shunt systems require monitoring and regular medical follow up. When complications occur, subsequent surgery to replace the failed part or the entire shunt system may be needed. Shunts have 50% failure rate in the first 2 years of placement.

Day 13 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. NPH is an abnormal increase of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles that may result from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, head trauma, infection, tumor, or complications of surgery. It is often mistaken for Dementia or even Alzheimers. However, many people develop NPH when none of these factors are present. Approximately 0.2% of people between 70 and 80 have NPH, with around 5% of those over 80 affected.

Day 11 National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: The first ever Pediatric & Adult Hydrocephalus Congressional Caucus was founded by Congressman Leonard Lance, (NJ) and Congressman Tim Walz, (MN) by request of the Pediatric Hydrocephalus Foundation. Prior to 2011, there was NO such group in Congress!

Day 10 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Hydrocephalus is the leading cause of BRAIN SURGERY among children in the United States.

Day 9 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Hydrocephalus is more common (1,000,000) than Cystic Fibrosis (30,000) or Down Syndrome (400,000), yet most people have never even heard of it.
This is 8 year old Hydro Hero Adalyn from Michigan.

Day 8 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. Dandy-Walker malformation accounts for two to 10 percent of children with hydrocephalus. It is defined by hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of fourth ventricle and hydrocephalus.
