Mme CƩlita Mercy Rosalva lived a very long life. One of the most beautiful people that I have spent so much time with over the years in Haiti. She taught me how to press plantain (bannann) and cut coconut and sing creole songs. She is now with her beloved family in heaven. Bondye beni w zanmim.

I would like to thank all of you who prayed for me while I was in Haiti and especially for all your comments. Even though my posts look like I am having a great time, there are challenges and your uplifting comments are what pull me through. You are all warriors! Tuesday Feb. 18
STAFF DAY!!
Today was spent with our employee ALL DAY! We began the day with STAFF CONTRACTS. I met with every single employee and renewed their contracts for another year. Then at 3 PM we had our first All Staff HFH Meeting! At this meeting we began with a song and a prayer, then a welcome followed by our mission statement. Then we went around and introduced each employee and their job. I was able to talk about each employee and the good things that they do for our organization. STAFF EMPOWERMENT. It was wonderful to hear all of their comments about how they appreciate working for Hands For Haiti. Next at 6 PM we had our all staff and friends of Hands for Haiti APPRECIATION DINNER. We had about 30 people in attendance and it was magnificent! There was a beautiful buffet dinner, drinks, and dancing! I love this part so much. It’s just so wonderful seeing everybody enjoy being together. We work so much together that it’s nice to have some time for recreation with each other also. It was so amazing to see how we have grown. When we did this in the beginning, they were maybe five or six of us so it is so amazing to see how our family has grown.
God has truly blessed us!

Monday, Feb. 17
Today was a day of many meetings! I don’t think I took a single picture! We started out at the bank this morning, then headed to the notary (guy in charge of legal papers.) Got caught up in an organizational staff meeting and missed our meeting with the mayor. Eeks! After a very late lunch, had some computer training in our office. Then finished up with one more meeting where we hired a new staff member! Yes, it was a bit of a boring but exhausting day. Tomorrow is more of the same, but will be a little bit more exciting šŸ™‚

Since there’s not a lot to write about today, I will leave you with a thought I had while in the mountains ~

I now understand more why it was such an amazing and beautiful gesture when the woman poured oil on Jesusā€˜s feet. As I’m walking through these very very dusty trails, this being the dry season in Haiti, I’ve been coming back every night and rubbing my feet down with lotion because they are so dry! Jesus’s feet must have felt the same walking on dusty trails in sandals. It was probably much relief and a joy to have someone rub oil on your feet! A beautiful, beautiful gesture, indeed.

Friday, Feb 14 - Reflections
Valentine’s Day šŸ’œ
A lot of emotions today. My morning began as usual in Haiti - thankful that I have good earplugs as the roosters were outside my window I saw. Hot Haitian coffee was waiting for me as well as a good Haitian breakfast complete with spaghetti, hard, boiled eggs, lettuce, and vegetables. The first day I always have to get accustomed to ā€œHaitian timeā€ meaning that leaving at the planned 10 AM time meant actually getting on the road at 1:30 PM. But… this also meant that many people stopped by to say hello to me and I was able to greet them. Now… up the mountain. This is where the rollercoaster of emotions begin. I swear God just took his blankets out of heaven, and rolled them up and down the landscape to make the mountains of Haiti. And the primitive homes of the people leading the most simplistic of lives, kids running and waving to see us when they hear our Polaris drive-by. There’s beauty and there’s peace. Mwen content. It’s at this time my heart settles and dives a bit deeper. Where am I? Am I where I want to be or where God wants me to be? What is He asking of me? I both love this contemplation and am somewhat guarded about it. But the mountains surround me and I find myself able to listen to His whisper. We bump around in the Polaris and turn the corner and there it is… and I gasp and the tears free flow. Atop the mountain in the distance is the beginning construction of Sante Lakay - home of health. This dream for so many is literally materializing for all to see. It is still a ways off but it is actually happening. And again I think - God must have a lot of trust in us because we are just a small little organization with not a lot, and He has some big plans.
Time to cut off the emotions - I have two groups of staff waiting to meet with me. In both of these meetings it’s just amazing to see the enthusiasm and love that the Haitian people have for serving their communities. Our farm program staff have new, fresh ideas they want to implement and our health clinic staff are working hard to make our clinic the best it can be. After a long day a nice hot bucket shower under the stars was just what I needed. Now as I sit gazing at the speckled sky, I am feeling very blessed and loved. A perfect Valentine’s Day. Perfect until a rampant pig that broke out of his pen came running towards me! Time to go in. Well I guess it’s good night and Bondye beni ou - God bless you šŸ’œ Debbi
